New Rutgers University athletic director comes out

Newly hired Rutgers athletic director Julie Hermann comes out as gay: “I’m really blessed to have a wonderful family, and we’re excited to become part of the Rutgers community.”

The last sentence of Hermann’s 453-word bio on Rutgers’ official website says: “Hermann and her partner Dr. Leslie Danehy are the proud parents of a seven-year-old son, Aidan.”

Hermann is one of a few known athletic directors in Division I who has publicly acknowledged she is gay. She is one of only three current female ADs at the FBS level.

Fired Rutgers coach Mike Rice issues public statement about his abuse of players

Fired Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice has issued an emotional apology to the media:

As I stated three months ago after I watched the video…how deeply regrettable those actions… I also stated how I was going to try and work on changing and I think I have accomplished a lot of that.

I can’t say anything right now except I’m sorry… they’ll never be a time when I am going to use any of that as an excuse – or be any excuse.

I have let so many people down… my players, my administration, Rutgers University, the fans… my family who’s sitting in their house just huddled around because of the fact that their father… is an embarrassment to them.

It’s troubling but I will at some time…maybe I will try to explain it but right now there’s no explanation for what’s on those films because there is no excuse for it – I was wrong.

I want to tell everybody who’s believed in me… that I am deeply sorry for the pain and hardship that I have caused.

Rice was fired yesterday after hours of video was released showing him subjecting players to homophobic slurs and physical assaults.

Rice’s behavior was first reported by former director of player development Eric Murdock, who compiled footage of Rice’s actions—including kicking players and calling one a “fucking fairy” and a “fucking faggot.”

Initially, Rice was just suspended for three games, sent to anger-management classes and fined $50,000. But when ESPN and other media outlets got a hold of the disturbing 40-minute video, the school made an about-face and fired Rice.

Fox News unhappy abusive Rutgers coach Mike Rice fired

Fox News host Eric Bolling has the sadz that Rutgers University’s decided to fire men’s basketball coach Mike Rice, after video surfaced of Rice abusing players by shoving them, throwing basketballs at them, and harassing them with profane and homophobic language, including “fucking faggot.”

“We’re in the midst of political correctness crushing our ability to teach kinds, to discipline kids, to disagree with people or one another or kids,” Bolling complained. “Our culture is in decline, but this is an example of our culture in free fall and I’m saying this because he got fired, not because of what he did.”

“It’s time to toughen up.  I could talk about the ‘wussification of America, ‘wussification of American men.  This is it.”

Rutgers fires basketball coach Mike Rice over physical, verbal abuse

A day after video was aired on ESPN of Coach Mike Rice shoving, throwing basketballs (often at players heads), kicking, hurling anti-gay slurs and other language at his players, he has been fired by Rutgers University.

Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti fired Rice on Wednesday. Pernetti knew of the video, disseminated by lawyers of a former Rutgers athletics employee, since at least December but says he tried to “rehabilitate” Rice instead of fire him.

“I am responsible for the decision to attempt a rehabilitation of Coach Rice,” Pernetti said in a statement. “Dismissal and corrective action were debated in December and I thought it was in the best interest of everyone to rehabilitate, but I was wrong. Moving forward, I will work to regain the trust of the Rutgers community.”
