Podcast: Talking With Nevada State Senator Pat Spearman

Nevada state Sen. Pat Spearman

Today I’m talking with Nevada state Sen. Pat Spearman who is running for the Democratic nomination in Nevada’s District 4 for Congress.

The word “qualified” doesn’t even begin to cover the senator’s resume.

In her multi-faceted career, she’s earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science, a Doctor of Business Administration degree, and a Masters degree in Divinity.

A 29 year veteran of the U.S. Army where she achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel, she was elected to the Nevada state Senate in two landslide victories.

Spearman is smart, smart, smart.

She’s the only LGBTQ candidate running in Nevada this election cycle.

Hit the play button as we talk about what’s at stake this campaign season.

Jennifer Aniston is heading to the White House in Netflix’s upcoming comedy, First Ladies.

Netflix has announced that Jennifer Aniston and comedian Tig Notaro are set to star in the political comedy playing the most powerful couple in the world: president and first lady. Aniston will play POTUS and Notaro will play FLOTUS.

We’ve seen a few female presidents in movies and TV up to now, but never a lesbian couple taking up residence at the most famous address in the world.

The project was pitched by Notaro and her wife Stephanie Allynne, who will also write the screenplay.

According to the log line, “First Ladies is a political comedy about America’s first female President and her wife, The First Lady. When Beverly and Kasey Nicholson move into the White House, they’ll prove that behind every great woman… is another great woman.”

While the script hasn’t been written yet, the streaming network has already lined-up producers including Will Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum, Adam McKay, and Betsy Koch as well as Aniston and Notaro.

Louisiana Teen Will Be Allowed To Wear Tux To Her Prom

If this wasn’t the silliest thing to get upset about.

Last week, Claudetteia, 17, was told by Carroll High School Principal Taylor that she would not be allowed to attend her prom in Monroe, Louisiana, if she wore a tuxedo.

Seriously, who cares if a teenage girl wants to wear a tux. Didn’t Diane Keaton win an Oscar in 1977 for Annie Hall wearing men’s suits? And didn’t that start a huge fashion trend?

Geraldine Jackson, Claudetteia’s mother, met with Principal Taylor to discuss this further and was reportedly told that “girls wear dresses and boys wear tuxes, and that’s the way it is.”

Principal Taylor also reportedly claimed that approximately half of the faculty scheduled to work at the prom would refuse to chaperone if Claudetteia were permitted to wear a tuxedo.

Claudetteia and several of her friends originally planned on attending the prom together, but, because of the school’s refusal to allow Claudetteia to wear a tuxedo, have opted not go to the prom unless the school changes its discriminatory policy.

The negative response against Principal Taylor’s decision was swift. Two members of the Monroe County Board of Education, which oversees Carroll High School, vowed to ensure that Claudetteia would be allowed to wear a tuxedo to her prom.

Yesterday,  Principal Patrick Taylor and Monroe City School Board President Bishop Rodney McFarland Sr. contacted Claudetteia Love, who is being represented by the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), to inform her that she will be allowed to wear a tuxedo to her senior prom on April 24.

“We are pleased to hear that Principal Taylor and the Monroe City School Board corrected this wrong before any serious harm was done. Forbidding girls from wearing a tuxedo to the prom would have served no purpose other than to reinforce the worst sorts of harmful stereotypes and censor a core part of Claudetteia’s identity,” said NCLR Executive Director Kate Kendell. “The school is doing the right thing by supporting its students and teaching them the value of respect and acceptance of one another’s differences.”

Country Music: “Girl Crush” Gets Dropped From Radio, Erroneously Labelled Lesbian Song

Earlier today, I was reading about a new country song – “Girl Crush” by Little Big Town that is now facing some opposition on it’s way to becoming a huge hit because some listeners are misinterpreting the lyrics as promoting a “gay agenda.”

The song lyrics deal with an ex-girlfriend who wishes she was like her ex’s new girlfriend. However, as the lyrics praise the new girlfriend, it’s been interpreted as a “lesbian love song.”

“I want to taste her lips, yeah ‘cause they taste like you / I want to drown myself in a bottle of her perfume / I want her long blond hair, I want her magic touch / Yeah cause maybe then, you’d want me just as much… I got a girl crush.”

Due to the somewhat dim-mindedness of some radio listeners, country radio is beginning to drop the song from playlists.

Now, Country superstar Dierks Bentley has chimed in on the issue:

“When I heard that song, I never even thought about it being about a girl crush or a lesbian [romance]. And when I thought about it that way, I liked it even more,” Bentley said. “It’s just so silly, but, it’s always been that way. Look at Miranda Lambert’s career: She’s always cutting songs that are a little edgier, like ‘Gunpowder & Lead,’ about shooting down this guy who’s getting out of jail for beating you up, you know? You keep pushing down that wall and eventually the fans will demand it and push for those changes.”

“I have so much respect for Little Big Town and [producer] Jay Joyce … to take chances like that and keep the genre going and moving, it requires bold artists. The song being pulled is probably one of the best things that could happen to them,” he added. “Like when Garth Brooks’ “The Thunder Rolls” got banned from CMT for being too edgy. It just makes fans want to hear it more and go out there and find it.”

“Girl Crush” is currently the #1 country single on iTunes.

Pastor Larry Tomczak: Men are “effeminate” as punishment for being gay

According to conservative Tennessee pastor and media pundit Pastor Larry Tomzcak, gay men are “effeminate” because God.

Or something.

Not sure what that means for bears or the leather community, but, whatever…

Transcript:

“I have watched people go into a lifestyle, and all of a sudden they become…a man starts to become very effeminate — mannerisms, speech. I’ve seen the reverse, I’ve seen the same thing with women start becoming mannish. What’s going on? They’re taking in their bodies a penalty for deviating from God’s loving design and plan.”
