SURF THE MUSICAL to close a month after opening

SURF THE MUSICAL, recently opened at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, will be closing after next Wednesday’s performance. The show July 17th after three weeks of previews.

I’m always sad to see people out of work. Especially those who work in entertainment given my long career in the theater. But having attended the opening night, it was clear there were some issues with the project that I can only assume have not been addressed or fixed yet.

Las Vegas Weekly reports:

But the show never caught on, receiving reviews that ranged from tepid to poisonous and reportedly never sold more than 200 tickets to any performance in a 1,500-seat theater. For at least one show, fewer than 50 tickets were purchased (prices were in line with some of the top Las Vegas productions — $70 to $158).

“Surf” is the second musical driven by Beach Boys music to ride a short wave. In 2005, “Good Vibrations” (which also was not endorsed by the band) closed on Broadway after just 94 performances. As it turns out, that figure is more than double the number of shows “Surf” managed on the Strip.

Tim McGraw & Faith Hill to headline in Las Vegas

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill will open their own superstar run in Las Vegas at the Venetian Hotel and Casino this winter.

The show will be called “Soul 2 Soul” and  tickets will go on sale August 13th at 8am.  Tickets will start at $95.50 and go up to $250.

At this point, there will be ten weekends of shows – 4 shows per weekend.

Word is the show will open around December 7-8  and the show will be a brand new, “built from the ground up” production.

At the announcement Tim McGraw said “This is all about us together.”

Also, commenting on the past trend of stars “retiring” to Las Vegas, Tim said “It’s not the same Vegas.  You can come here at the peak of your career.”

I’ll definitely be seeing the fab couple.  I’m a big fan of both and love how they handle their careers with class, dignity and talent.

Jaymes Vaughan of the Chippendales tweeted this cellphone pic today while the guys were in the middle of their annual Chippendales calendar shoot.  The Chippendales calendar was one of the very first “hunky guy” calendars that took off in the early 80s, and to this day one of the biggest selling calendars on the market.

Those are some SERIOUS abs, kids.  Don’t try this at home – these guys are professionals.

Ouch.

Review: Pia Zadora returns to the Las Vegas stage

Pia Zadora, veteran of Broadway, music and film, made her Smith Center debut in Las Vegas this weekend at the gorgeous Cabaret Jazz venue after a 15 year absence from performing.

This was my first opportunity to visit Cabaret Jazz at the Smith Center and I was not disappointed.  Not only is the venue beautiful, but the entire experience was top rate due to the customer service provided by the entire staff.  I encourage Las Vegans to look to Cabaret Jazz for a terrific night out.

With a career that began when she was 7, her career roles range from the original Broadway productions of “Fiddler on the Roof” to 1990s “Crazy For You,” from the 1964 movie “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians” to her 1981 performance in the film “Butterfly.”

In the 1980s, she began a music career that spanned pop, rock and standards, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Vocal Performance Female for “Rock It Out” in 1984.

With video testimony by Grammy and Academy Award-winning legend Frank Sinatra praising Zadora, she made her entrance from the back of the audience. The audience made apparent its affection for the sunny, Golden Globe winner as she took the stage for the evening.

Often referred to as “the little lady with the big voice,” she made good on that title with several swinging arrangements of American Songbook standards like “Pick Yourself Up,” ” The Lady Is A Tramp,” and “I’m Beginning To See The Light.” With expert musical direction from Vincent Falcone (Frank Sinatra’s former music director) at the helm, Zadora delivered time and again with big voiced, crowd-pleasing selections of songs.

While she does well with big, powerful vocals, her voice demonstrates less color and expression during quieter passages. Like a expensive race car, she seems anxious to open the engine all the way up rather than cruise the side roads of personal lyrics, like those of the Michel Legrand hit “How Do You Keep The Music Playing?” Interestingly, she tacked on an awkward, big-voiced ending to the song that seemed out of place, although she clearly felt at ease in delivering the unexpected money notes at the end.

When it comes to lyric interpretation, Zadora takes most songs at face value. More big band singer than cabaret, she tends to play to the audience in a general manner, rather than exploring what may lie beneath the surface of the songs she sings.

Her encore – Jerry Herman’s gay anthem “I Am What I Am” – left the audience on a high note thanks to her light-hearted but full throated delivery.

Zadora delivered just what her fans anticipated — a dose of classic American songs in the terrific setting of the Smith Center’s Cabaret Jazz room.

Las Vegas: Surf the Musical opens at Planet Hollywood

Surf the Musical, the new musical featuring the songs of The Beach Boys, is now open at the Showroom at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

I attended the opening night of the new show and while I enjoyed some aspects, there’s still some work to be done. I grew up listening to and loving the Beach Boys music – and I still do – however this adaptation into a jukebox musical is a bit clunky and lacks the ease of the Beach Boys “fun in the sun” catalog. Like many jukebox musicals, the story is somewhat cobbled together and “shoe-horned” into something of a story. As Mamma Mia and Jersey Boys have proven, it is possible to create a successful show from a pre-existing collection of songs. This production isn’t quite there yet.

I enjoyed a lot of the ideas choreographer RJ Durell brought to the production which were executed in a muscular fashion by the company of dancers. There were several cool, creative ideas that felt very fresh and at home with the Beach Boys music.

However, at times the lighting and the sound design seemed to be fighting with the production as a whole. In the opening sequence it was very hard to tell who was singing and where on stage they were. And the sound was very muddy. During some dance numbers the lighting made it hard to know where the audience was expected to focus.

Also, unfortunately, the two romantic leads were capable but not spectacular in their starring roles. Marshal Kennedy Carolan (“Tanner”) and Lauren Zakrin (“Brooke”) delivered nice but not stellar vocals and broad character choices. It was something like watching an understudy go on for the first time. They weren’t bad – just not great.  I will say this though – both are attractive, sunny blonds who certainly look like they belong in a Beach Boys musical.

However, I’m not sure that the actors are completely to blame. The author (and producer) of the show, J. Burton Gold, is apparently a successful real estate developer and golf course architect. His co-author, Jason Setterlund, lists this as his first musical. Take what you will from that.

Fortunately, the music makes up for many of the lapses. With the required “megamix” finale, the audience walks out feeling some “good vibrations.”

Joey Lawrence – Shirtless and sexy opening night at Chippendales

I was at the Chippendales Theater tonight in Las Vegas at the Rio Hotel and Casino where Joey Lawrence has his red carpet and opening night as the new Celebrity Guest Host/MC at Chippendales.

Joey posed in the iconic Chippendales “Cuffs & Collars”, then took some pics with two of Chippendales finest, JJ and Sami.

He then gave several interviews for Extra, Inside Edition and the local QTV.

The whole time Joey was very upbeat, laughing and playing with the photographers and reporters.

More pics later from the performance. Enjoy!
