Nike unveils Gay Pride sneaker – the #BeTrue Free Run 5.0

Nike goes a step further in it’s support for the LGBT community. Presenting the Gay Pride Sneaker – the #BeTrue Free Run 5.0 – inspired by and supporting the LGBT community, released in time for gay pride season.

From the Advocate:

Profits of #BeTrue sales will go to the LGBT Sports Coalition, which has set the goal to end the practice of anti-LGBT discrimination in sport by 2016.

The sneaker promises a glove-like fit, with a barefoot running feel.

In addition to the shoe, the collection includes sandals, graphic t’s and tanks, and an iPhone 5 case.

Nike is the sponsor of the second annual LGBT Sports Summit next week in Portland, Ore., which brings together leaders from across the LGBT sports movement to figure out how we can all work together toward common goals.

Nike, in addition to its 15-year relationship with LGBT organizations and supporting equality in sport, sponsors top WNBA draft pick and out athlete Brittney Griner and out NBA veteran Jason Collins.

Jason Collins and Jarron Collins on Jimmy Kimmel

Twins Jason and Jarron (“the straight one”) Collins bring some humor to what might be one of the year’s biggest sports and LGBT stories in a sit-down with Jimmy Kimmel.

When asked if the “coming out” experience was positive, brother Jarron jumps in to share that Jason went from 3,000 Twitter follwers to over 100K in 24 hours.

Yeah, I think folks are not having a big problem with Jason.

There. See? All good.

Howard Kurtz apologizes for false accusations regarding Jason Collins

On CNN Reliable Sources show today, host Howard Kurtz apologized for the Jason Collins accusations that preceded his firing from the Daily Beast, and discussed the misfire with Politico’s Dylan Byers and NPR’s David Folkenflik.

The Daily Beast retracted a column about NBA player Jason Collins by Kurtz this week, and was announced ending its relationship with Howard Kurtz after he falsely claimed that the player had not disclosed that he had once been engaged to a woman.

Said Kurtz:

“On Monday, I read the ‘Sports Illustrated’ article by Jason Collins, the first pro male-team athlete to come out publicly as gay. I read it too fast and carelessly missed that Jason Collins said he was engaged previously to a woman and [I] then wrote and commented that he was wrong to keep that from readers when, in fact, I was the one that was wrong.

“My logic between what happened between Jason Collins and his former fiance and what was and wasn’t disclosed — in hindsight, well, I was wrong to even raise that and showed a lack of sensitivity to the issue.

“Also, I didn’t give him a chance to respond to my account before I wrote it and in addition my first correction to the story was not as complete and full as it should have been.”

Kurtz also stated his exit from The Daily Beast had nothing to do with the Jason Collins debacle and had been planned for some time.

The Daily Beast fires columnist over mischaracterization of Jason Collins

Politico is reporting that The Daily Beast today fired Howard Kurtz after he published an inaccurate column about Jason Collins coming out:

“The Daily Beast and Howard Kurtz have parted company,” Tina Brown, the site’s editor in chief, said in a statement sent to POLITICO.

The decision comes after Kurtz published a blog post that falsely asserted that Collins, who announced he was gay in an article for Sports Illustrated, had neglected to mention his previous engagement to a woman. In fact, Collins mentioned that engagement in the article and in a subsequent interview with ABC News. The Daily Beast retracted that post on Thursday morning.

Tweeted Kurtz: “I’ve enjoyed my time at the Daily Beast but as we began to move in different directions, both sides agreed it was best to part company. This was in the works for some time, but want to wish all my colleagues continued success with a terrific website. Newsweek and the Beast are great brands, but the time had come for me to move on to other opportunities.”

The Daily Beast on Kurtz’s error:

The Daily Beast has retracted a May 2, 2013, blog post by Howard Kurtz titled “Jason Collins’ Other Secret.” The piece contained several errors, resulting in a misleading characterization of NBA player Collins and the story he co-wrote in Sports Illustrated in which he came out as gay.

In that piece, Collins wrote, “When I was younger I dated women. I even got engaged. I thought I had to live a certain way. I thought I needed to marry a woman and raise kids with her. I kept telling myself the sky was red, but I always knew it was blue.”

In his original blog post, Kurtz incorrectly stated that Collins “didn’t come clean” about the engagement. In an amended version, Kurtz added that Collins “downplayed” the engagement and “didn’t dwell on it.”
