Olympian Gus Kenworthy Looks Back On Coming Out

I am gay. Those three words are how I began the caption on this same photo one-year-ago, today. I remember waking up that day, with the most overwhelming sense of emotions. I was excited for a future where I no longer had to mask myself with heteronormative posturing. But then, of course, I felt apprehensive because I didn’t know how people were going to react. I’d already told my immediate family and a few close friends and they all offered nothing but love and support and I decided that even if the rest of the world abandoned me, their support would be enough. However when the day finally came, I was terrified of losing friends, fans and sponsors. What I didn’t anticipate though, was all that I was about to gain. I’ve gained so much over the past year and I am so tremendously thankful for all of it. I’ve started to love myself, a big step for someone who spent their adolescence in self-contempt. I’ve made lifelong friends, fallen in love and felt truer and happier than I ever imagined. I’ve witnessed myself swell with pride while holding my guy’s hand walking down the street; no longer dictated by fear to walk with my hands in my pockets acting like the person I loved was merely a friend, an acquaintance. I got to ski completely unencumbered and ended up having my best competitive season ever because of it. And while competing I got to, finally, acknowledge my boyfriend standing at the bottom of the half-pipe cheering me on; something I regrettably failed to do in my previous 5-year-long closeted relationship. Ultimately, for the first time in my life, I got to feel free – something everybody should feel every day! I can’t thank you all enough for the support you’ve given me over the last year, it truly means the world to me. I get messages every day from guys saying my story has helped them come to terms with themselves or given them the confidence to tell their friends or family that they’re gay. And that, I have to say, has been the highlight of my past year. Of course there will always be nay-sayers but if I’ve helped even one person feel better about themselves then this process, for me, has all been worth it. I love you guys. ❤️💛💚💙💜

Hunky Gus Kenworthy Covers Attitude Magazine

Out Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy on the cover of Attitude Magazine

The handsome, swoon-worthy Olympic skier took time out from his extreme-sports competition schedule for Attitude Magazine.

In an exclusive 10-page shoot and interview in our brand new March Issue – available to download now and in shops today – the Gus reveals how heartbreak helped inspire him to finally go public about his sexuality, recalls the homophobic he used to be confronted with from his friends and fellow competitors, and admits he thinks Russia’s anti-gay laws made it “unfit” to host the Sochi Winter Olympics back in 2014.

Kenworthy has mentioned recently that his publicist had asked him to pull back on the shirtless pics, much to our dismay. But there’s plenty of biceps and smiles to hold us over here.

Check out the behind-the-scenes video below.

ESPN Cuts To Gus Kenworthy’s BF During X Games Coverage

In an effort to show more facets of competitive athletes, it’s not unusual for a network to cut to an athlete’s loved ones in the crowd of fans at sporting events.

Last weekend, in what might have been a first, ESPN cut to skier Gus Kenworthy’s current significant other, Matthew Wilkas, cheering him on during the Aspen X Games. This is the first X Games since Kenworthy publicly came out a few months ago.

Kenworthy told Rolling Stone:

“Yeah, the TV boyfriend thing sounds weird, I know. But everyone I looked up to growing up, they would show their girlfriend on TV – you know, Simon Dumont’s girlfriend, or Tanner Hall’s girlfriend, or whatever. I was just kind of bummed that it was something that I’d never have. I felt like I was never going to be confident and authentic and introduce someone as my boyfriend to the reporters and have him on TV.

“It was really special to want to do that and be happy about it. It was amazing. I looked up at the screen and saw Matt at the bottom.”

Looks like Wilkas may have been a good luck charm as Kenworthy, who had never medaled at the X Games, took home two silver medals at the event.

The handsome athlete shared his enthusiasm at having his bf included in the coverage on his Instagram account.

Great going Gus! And ESPN!

Out Olympian Gus Kenworthy made an appearance during CNN’s lead-up to the New Year with Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin last night.

No surprise, Griffin was in her usual “forward” mode during Kenworthy’s time on the air, kissing him whenever she could and giving a definition of what it means to be “pansexual.” The silver medalist did try to evoke a New Year’s kiss from Cooper, but to no avail.

During the drop-in, Kenworthy revealed he is in fact dating actor Matthew Wilkas, sharing this pic via Instagram shortly after the stroke of midnight.

Gus Kenworthy On The 8 Things Straight Friends Should Never Say To Gays

Teen Vogue‘s Phillip Picardi and newly out (and hot) Olympian Gus Kenworthy discuss the 8 things straight folks should never say to their gay friends.

I’m not so sure some of these things are actually “offensive” to say to the gays – like, “How did you come out?” is offensive?

But I’m having a thing about Gus lately, so I like the video 🙂

How teenage girl of me is that?
