California: Marriage equality shows strong support 58% vs 36%

A new Los Angeles Times poll shows a 22% spread between supporters and opponents of marriage equality in California:

The poll found that 58% of the state’s registered voters believe same-sex marriage should be legal, compared with 36% against, a margin of 22 points. When the same pollsters asked that question three years ago, 52% favored gay marriage and 40% opposed it, a 12-point spread.

Most national polls this year have found majority support, but only one of those surveys reported it as high as 58%. The average was roughly 51% in favor of gay marriage. As in the rest of the country, more women (63%) than men (52%) in California favor same-sex marriage.

Younger California voters also support gay marriage by larger margins than older voters, the poll found. Whereas 76% of voters ages 18 to 29 support legalizing the unions, only 52% of those ages 50 to 64 agree.

France: Government moves to disband anti-gay marriage group after murder

On Saturday French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault ordered the Revolutionary National Front (JNR in French) to disband following the allegations that the group was somehow involved in the death of pro-gay protester Clement Meric.

The JNR is the militant wing of a far-right group called the Third Way.

Its leader Serge Ayoub, who has been questioned by police but is not a suspect, on Saturday again denied the group had anything to do with the death of 18-year-old Clement Meric.

Meric, a student at the prestigious Sciences-Po university, died after a clash in a busy Paris shopping area on Wednesday between skinheads and left-wing activists.

Five people detained over the death went before a judge on Saturday and Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said the main suspect, named Esteban, was being investigated on suspicion of murder. The five suspects are aged between 19 and 32 and include one woman. Interior Minister Manuel Valls on Friday vowed to crack down on far-right groups.

Several members of the group, which marched in the most recent Manif Pour Tous protest against gay marriage, are alleged to have murdered 18 year-old pro-gay activist Clement Meric.

Colorado: Bakery happy to bake for dog wedding but not lesbians

Masterpiece Cake Shop in Colorado will bake for dog wedding but not for gay marriage

Another bakery – this time in Colorado – decided they couldn’t possibly bake for a same-sex wedding/commitment ceremony based on deeply held religious beliefs.

And then they agreed to make goods for a dog wedding.

Bakery fail.

Stephanie Schmalz and her partner, Jeanine, wanted to order some cupcakes to celebrate their commitment ceremony. They contacted Masterpiece Cake Shop in Lakewood, Colorado, but the store refused to take their order, informing the couple that they have a strict policy against selling cakes for same-sex weddings and ceremonies.

Then Stephanie tried a little experiment. She called the bakery and told the owner, Jack Phillips, that she was planning to host a wedding celebration for two dogs. She told him that the dog wedding cake would need to feed 20 people and should be decorated with the names “Roscoe” and “Buffy.” Without hesitation, Phillips quoted her a price and asked how soon she needed it.

When another couple tried to place an order with Phillips, he told them he would not provide a cake for same-sex weddings, the same way he would not provide cakes for pedophiles.

New campaign for gay marriage in Australia – “What are you having?”

Commissioned by Shelley Argent of the Australian National Spokesperson for PFLG, this new video is part of a new campaign down under:

The campaign’s theme is that: “Any child can be born gay. So marriage equality is every family’s issue.”

Spokeswoman for PFLG Shelley Argent told News Limited the campaign was designed to build support for gay marriage on the grounds that gay children were “born that way”.

“Being a lesbian or gay is not a choice,” she said. “It’s just the way you are.”

France’s first gay married couple honeymoon in Tel-Aviv

As Gay Pride kicks off in Tel Aviv, France’s first gay married couple, Vincent Autin and Bruno Boileau, are clearly enjoying life while honeymooning in ‘the White City.”

On Friday morning, after spending the night at the seaside mansion of French Ambassador Christophe Bigot, Autin and Boileau arrived at Tel Aviv’s Gan Meir for a morning of music and speeches before the annual Pride Parade.

“France has voted for the law of love,” Autin, a 40-year-old gay rights activist, told a group of reporters who gathered to greet him and his new spouse. “For us it’s very important to be a bridge, especially here in the Middle East, so that what’s happened in France, and the way we are received and embraced here, can become an example for the rest of the Middle East.”

Congratulations to the happy couple! More wine!

Lambda Legal offers infographic on possible impending SCOTUS gay marriage opinions

With the US Supreme Court’s decisions on the impending California Prop 8 and the repeal of DOMA cases, Lambda Legal provides a quick and easy infographic to show what the most likely decisions and their effects on gay marriage in the USA would be.

My understanding is that SCOTUS releases decisions on Mondays. So these decisions are bound to be released on one of the remaining Mondays in this years SCOTUS calendar. Look for the 10th, 17th or 24th of this month to see what will be very big news for the LGBT community.

First same-sex marriage license issued in Minnesota

From KSTP.com:

More than a dozen couples had applied for licenses in Hennepin, Ramsey and Washington counties by noon Thursday. In Pipestone County in southwestern Minnesota, which has been accepting applications since Monday, Recorder Mary Ann DeGroot said one couple signed up immediately.

A recent analysis by the state Department of Management and Budget estimated that 5,000 Minnesota gay couples would get married in the first year under the new law.
