Facebook to allow “auto-play” video ads in your newsfeed

This doesn’t bode well for a satisfying web experience.

It was only a matter of time before Facebook started bringing auto-play ads into users’ news feeds.

Unnamed sources tell Bloomberg that Facebook will start letting marketers “buy their way directly” into Facebook users’ feeds “with a 15-second pitch” that will cost them between $1 million to $2.5 million per day to buy.

Bloomberg’s sources say that “the commercials will initially be sold on a full-day basis and can only be targeted to users based on age and gender” and that “Facebook members won’t see a spot more than three times in a given day.”

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has pushed back the timetable for when the new ads will launch because he wants to make sure that they don’t degrade users’ experience on the site, Bloomberg’s sources say.

Because we know how much we all love “auto-play” videos when you’re surfing the interwebs.

Ugh.

In related news, Facebook closed at $38.05, above it’s Initial Public Offering price, today for the first time since the stock’s debut.

Instagram now has video capability

Facebook added video for Instagram to compete with the fast-growing Twitter app, Vine.

Instagram’s Kevin Systrom says video clips on Instagram can be 3 to 15 seconds long and include “shaky hand” video stabilization technology called Cinema.

Facebook acquired the photo-sharing app Instagram in April 2012 for $715 million, just before Facebook went public. Instagram now has more than 100 million users.

Adding video to Instagram is a move to compete with rival Twitter. Twitter acquired Vine last October and it launched in January. Vine has grown to 13 million users.

I’ve downloaded the app and it seems very easy to use. AND you can apply filters to the short video clips the same way you do photos on Instagram. Plus multiple frame and uploading options.

I’ll play with it and see what I think. How about you readers? Would you use the app for a quick 15 second video upload?

Bono’s three year old Facebook investment pays off

By the close of trading today, Bono will become the richest rocker in the world, courtesy of Mark Zuckerberg and company.

Bono owns 2.3 percent of Facebook shares, through his investment group, Elevation Partners. The investment will be worth an estimated $1.5 billion by 4 PM ET — not bad for a $90 million investment back in 2009.

If you’re Bono, it truly is a beautiful day.
