Staging Sweet Charity – “The Rhythm of Life”

I saw this movie back when I was a kid and thought Sammy Davis Jr, was super cool. And the dancing stoned hippies are uber-groovy.

In this production at Lyric Theater we have a new millenium version of Sammy, Billy Porter (starring in the new Broadway musical Kinky Boots this fall) playing the part of “Daddy Brubeck.”

Fun day ahead.

Billy Porter and cast of GREASE: “Beauty School Dropout”

How I love me some Billy Porter!

I posted recently about Billy is set to star in the upcoming Broadway musical “Kinky Boots” where I’m sure he’ll stop the show. But he’s been a show-stopper on Broadway for a long time.

Billy killed it every night as the “Teen Angel” in the 1994 revival of GREASE. So smart that the director knew to let Billy do “what Billy does.” If you’re going to remake a classic, it’s creative and brave to go in a whole different direction – which they do here.

I loved seeing Billy do this. Seriously, it’s difficult to believe that Billy wasn’t nominated for a Featured Actor Tony Award that year.

Watch and enjoy.

Sing Billy!

Billy Porter headed back to Broadway

Thrilled to hear the news the fabulous Billy Porter looks headed back to Broadway!

Tony nominee Stark Sands and Billy Porter will participate in a workshop of the previously announced new musical Kinky Boots in January. Featuring a score by Cyndi Lauper and book by Harvey Fierstein, the musical adaptation of the cult film is planning a Broadway run during the 2012-13 season.

Jerry Mitchell is set to direct and choreograph.

A 2005 indie hit, Kinky Boots starred Chiwetel Ejiofor (Children of Men, American Gangster) as a drag queen who teams up with the head of a struggling shoe company to try and save the business by designing a line of fetish shoes.

Sands earned a Tony nomination for Journey’s End. He has also appeared on Broadway in American Idiot and off-Broadway in Twelfth Night and The Tempest. Billy Porter has graced Broadway in productions that include Smokey Joe’s Cafe, Grease, Five Guys Named Moe and Miss Saigon. He has appeared off-Broadway in Angels in America, Birdie Blue, Ghetto Superstar, Radiant Baby, Songs for a New World and The Merchant of Venice.

“Time” by Billy Porter

There are days I can’t comprehend Billy’s immense talent.

I’m so lucky that I know Billy, and I can talk to him about his talent, his vision, his passions…

It was so exciting when Billy’s song “Time” was featured on So You Think You Can Dance a few seasons back.  It brought Billy even more attention, which he clearly deserves.

Yes – it’s “Time” for Billy Porter.
