Former NC Gov. Pat McCrory Named “Phobie Of The Year”

“Phobie of the Year” – Former NC Gov. Pat McCrory

North Carolina thankfully has a new governor as former State Attorney General Roy Cooper (D) was sworn in just after the stroke of midnight last night.

He replaces The Advocates‘ “Phobie of the Year,” now former Gov. Pat McCrory.

Although the competition was tough picking the biggest hater of 2016, McCrory wins the title for his atrocious support and passage of North Carolina’s anti-LGBT “bathroom bill,” HB2.

Here’s how The Advocate frames McCrory’s despicable stance:

Even as jobs left the state and performers canceled concerts and millions piled up in lost revenue, McCrory and Republicans refused to rethink what they passed in House Bill 2.

Lawmakers hadn’t approved a RFRA exactly. Instead, they passed a law banning any locality from including LGBT people in antidiscrimination ordinances. In other words, they wanted to ensure that discrimination against LGBT people remains legal no matter where you go in North Carolina. They also barred transgender people from using the bathroom that matches their gender identity in any government building, without citing a single incident caused in North Carolina by letting transgender people use the bathroom of their choice.

McCrory owns responsibility for the law, having called a special session to pass it. But he also sued the Obama administration to make the case that there’s no legal basis for protecting transgender people.

Republicans sided heavily with McCrory, who was just so sure he’d win by demagoguing transgender people that he went on Meet the Press to make the case nationally. The state GOP senatorial committee launched a Stand With McCrory website that was basically a fan site for HB 2. McCrory actually ran a campaign ad touting his transphobia as a major selling point. He invented a story about how liberals supposedly want boys to shower with girls in a TV commercial ironically titled “Common Sense.” He even had transphobic bumper stickers printed up.

“You know, when we were raising average teacher pay, creating new jobs, and cutting taxes, other folks were actually pushing to make our schools allow boys to use the girls’ locker rooms and showers,” said McCrory. “Are we really talking about this? Does the desire to be politically correct outweigh our children’s privacy and safety? Not on my watch.”

And with that, North Carolinians voted him out of office.

Come election night, the folks of North Carolina decided they had seen enough business leave their state over the hateful legislation that McCrory championed.

He didn’t go quietly though. McCrory drew out the certification of the election results for weeks trying to toss the decision to the Republican controlled state legislature.

But to no avail.

Ever the sore loser, McCrory couldn’t help but take potshots at his critics on his way out the door.

From The Raleigh News & Observer:

He said HB2 likely played a major role in his election defeat, and he blamed the Charlotte City Council – which passed a nondiscrimination ordinance that prompted HB2 – as well as the LGBT advocacy groups that backed economic boycotts of the state. He called it a “manufactured crisis.”

“I wish I would have been successful in convincing Charlotte not to start this masquerade of an issue, that no doubt had an impact on my future election and on North Carolina in a very unfair way,” he says in the video, adding that he was “unsuccessful in convincing the legislature maybe not to overreact.”

Repeal of North Carolina Hate Law Unsure At This Time

(image via WRAL)

Although GOP state lawmakers had promised to repeal their divisive hate law HB2 if the city of Charlotte would first repeal their local ordinance giving LGBTs protections, it’s not sure how things will shake out.

Charlotte fulfilled their side of the bargain, but Republican lawmakers, now in a special session, are foot dragging.

From the Charlotte Observer:

Minutes into the House session, Rep. Jeff Collins of Nash County rose to declare the session unconstitutional and decried the “extraordinary hubris” of Charlotte City Council in prompting it. Two other members joined him.

Rep. Michael Speciale of New Bern moved that the session be immediately adjourned. He was ruled out of order. Sen. Tommy Tucker, a Republican from Waxhaw, filed a resolution to adjourn the session.

By 11 a.m., the House had gone into a recess that was later extended to 1 p.m. without taking up HB2. House Republicans gathered in caucus. A growing group of protesters gathered outside the chamber.

The Charlotte Chamber, apparently alarmed by the turn of events, sent out a urgent call to action for the public to call legislators.

“This morning the Charlotte City Council approved a full and clean repeal of their non-discrimination ordinance that led to the state’s approval of HB2, a bill that has caused serious economic damage to our economy and to the perception of our state,” the chamber said. “The legislature is in special session at this moment. It is not known if there are enough votes to repeal.”

As House Republicans mulled their next move, Sen. Jeff Jackson, a Charlotte Democrat, filed his own HB2 repeal bill. Sen. Mike Woodard, a Republican from Durham, and Sen. Terry Van Duyn, a Democrat from Asheville, signed on as co-sponsors.

Stay tuned.

Susan “Cindy Brady” Olsen Thinks It’s Hilarious She’s Being Called Anti-LGBTQ

Susan Olsen

Susan Olsen, who was famous 40 years ago for playing “Cindy Brady” on the 70s sitcom, The Brady Bunch, says she recently got fired from her radio show gig because she supports Donald Trump.

And, she thinks it’s “hilarious” she’s been labeled as a homophobe after her anti-gay rant that actually got her canned from the radio show.

Via Susan Olsen’s Facebook page:

Somehow the actual apology that I made days ago did not get posted. I am very sorry for ever hurting the LGBT community that I love so much. For that, I am sorry and frankly find it hilarious that I am being called a homophobe. What could be more rediculous??? I think that the real LGBT community knows that I have and always will support them. I love you!

Arizona Man Goes On Wild Rant In LGBT-Friendly Church Because Trump’s Win Gave Him “Permission”

An Arizona man, driving past a church flying an LGBT rainbow flag, stopped his car and stormed into the church’s office ranting about the flag, the LGBT community and more.

He said Donald Trump’s presidential win gave him permission to do and say what he wants.

From the local CBS affiliate in Tempe:

A Tempe church is warning all Valley religious organizations about a man storming into its office using inflammatory, graphic language about the LGBT community, citing Donald Trump’s presidential win as permission. Tempe police said the stranger saw the rainbow flag hanging outside the Community Christian Church on Wednesday and went inside the office to voice his disgust.

“It made me so angry and afraid for our country,” Pastor Doug Bland said. Aside from the man voicing his hatred for the LGBT community, he threatened to pay people to protest outside the church and spread lies about pedophilia among the congregation.

“He said that if Hillary would have won he would have driven right on by the church without stopping, but because Trump won he felt he had permission to say and act the way he wanted to expressing the hate that he had for this particular group of people,” Bland said.

The pastor said his employee kept her composure and didn’t escalate the situation. The man eventually left without further incident. According to Tempe police, the incident was documented but detectives said the man didn’t commit a crime. He threatened to spread lies and picket the church but didn’t cause bodily harm. If he returns, the man could be cited with trespassing.

Trump Taps Same-Sex Marriage Foe For Education Secretary

Donald Trump has announced his choice for Secretary of Education and it’s anti-gay marriage, Amway billionaire Betsy DeVos of Michigan.

In addition to the Amway fortune, the DeVos family also owns the Orlando Magic.

She becomes the second woman to join Donald Trump’s cabinet.

DeVos, a former Michigan Republican Party chairwoman, is well known for her support for charter schools and vouchers.

She and her husband, Dick DeVos, are mega-donors to the Michigan Republican party and well-known for their generous donations to GOP officials and candidates.

In 2012, ABC News ran a story on the DeVos which included the fact that they donated $500,000 to the virulently anti-LGBT organization, the National Organization for Marriage (NOM).

Additionally, DeVos and her husband donated $200,000 to Michigan’s ballot measure to ban same-sex marriage.

In other words, they REALLY don’t like the gays.

In response to that donation, LGBT activists called for a boycott of health and beauty company Amway, which is owned by DeVos’ father.

GLSEN issued this statement regarding the news:

“We are deeply concerned by the nomination of Betsy DeVos for U.S. Secretary of Education. GLSEN is committed to the principle that all students have a right to high-quality public education free from discrimination. DeVos’s record of advocacy for vouchers and tuition tax credits represents a rejection of that principle. We have seen time and time again that so-called “school choice” undercuts civil-rights enforcement and drains public education systems of desperately needed funds. True educational equity requires schools that serve the most at-risk students, including students of color; students with disabilities; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and/or questioning (LGBTQ) students; and English-language learners. Vouchers and tuition tax credits do not advance this cause.

“As we have seen over the past eight years, federal civil rights oversight of education is essential to ensure that all students in this country have real access to opportunity. There is so much to be celebrated in the civil rights gains made during the Obama Administration. As a nation, we must build on that legacy. Over the years, people of good will across the political spectrum have been able to come together to promote the success of all students, and we call upon DeVos to join us in moving forward.”

And this from the National Education Association, the country’s largest education labor union with 3 million members:

Every day, educators use their voice to advocate for every student to reach his or her full potential. We believe that the chance for the success of a child should not depend on winning a charter lottery, being accepted by a private school, or living in the right ZIP code. We have, and will continue, to fight for all students to have a great public school in their community and the opportunity to succeed no matter their backgrounds or circumstances.

Betsy DeVos has consistently worked against these values, and her efforts over the years have done more to undermine public education than support students. She has lobbied for failed schemes, like vouchers — which take away funding and local control from our public schools — to fund private schools at taxpayers’ expense. These schemes do nothing to help our most-vulnerable students while they ignore or exacerbate glaring opportunity gaps. She has consistently pushed a corporate agenda to privatize, de-professionalize and impose cookie-cutter solutions to public education. By nominating Betsy DeVos, the Trump administration has demonstrated just how out of touch it is with what works best for students, parents, educators and communities.

But remember, Trump is going to be a “good friend” to the LGBT community.

Steve King: “I Want To Promote The ‘Natural’ Family”

Republican Congressman Steve King of Iowa, appearing on CNN’s New Day, told anchor Chris Cuomo that he wants to support the “natural family.”

The response was to a question as to whether Donald Trump’s child care plan would protect LGBT families. When Cuomo asked what King meant by “natural family,” King replied, “A man and a woman hopefully joined together in holy matrimony (emphasis on “holy”) blessed by God with children.”

Cuomo didn’t stop there. Cuomo mentioned the social research that shows children in same-sex families do just as well or better as those in heterosexual familes, King demurred.

“I think I’d need to look a little further into some of that research. You know we got down in the global warming argument and found out there was another side to that equation, too.”

It went on from there. Truly knuckle dragging stuff here.

Kudos to Cuomo and CNN for not letting King slide his backwards world view past the viewers.

This is what you get with Trump and his ilk.

Trump Campaign Manager: Conservative Women Are “Hated” Because They Aren’t “A Bunch Of Dykes”

Stephen Bannon, head of “alt-right” Breitbart News and current chief of the Donald Trump campaign explained on  Political Vindication Radio in 2011 that conservative women like Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann are hated by the left because they “threaten the progressive narrative” and they are not “a bunch of dykes that came from the Seven Sisters schools.”

Charming.

Bannon has also been in the headlines lately regarding reported domestic violence involving his former wife.

Listen below:

“That’s why there are some unintended consequences of the women’s liberation movement,” he continued. “That, in fact, the women that would lead this country would be pro-family, they would have husbands, they would love their children.”

“They wouldn’t be a bunch of dykes that came from the Seven Sisters schools up in New England,” he concluded. “That drives the left insane and that’s why they hate these women.”

Anti-LGBT Flip Benham Holds A Rally Of One Ranting About Penises At Charlotte Pride

Flip Benham flips out

Anti-LGBT loon Flip Benham spent a good part of his weekend sitting in a parking lot near one of the stages at Charlotte Pride attempting to ruin the event for thousands and thousands of attendees.

The good news is: he failed.

Armed with a loudspeaker, Benham ranted and raved about penises and rectums drawing a few folks who came to stare at the ridiculous spectacle.

I do wonder why it’s always penises and rectums? The hateful anti-Pride folks seem to have no problem with lesbian’s vaginas, only the gays penises. Hmm…

In any case, the weekend was a huge success for Charlotte. As a matter of fact, it was a record crowd thanks in part to the state’s hateful HB2 law.

From Charlotte’s CBS affiliate:

Last year, 120,000 people made it to Uptown for the Pride celebration. This year, organizers estimated closer to 200,000 people went to the Festival and Parade, including more than 3,500 marchers in the Parade. “This is amazing energy. This just brings you up so much,” said David Pable, one of the marchers.

The Charlotte Pride Festival and Parade aren’t just about the attendance records for the LGBT community. Instead, it has become a safe haven for free expression.

“You see all the people out here enjoying Pride and celebrating who they are, and have a chance to truly be who they are,” said Michelle Money, who went to both the Parade and Festival.

Because of the growth of both events, they were declared extraordinary events for the first time ever, meaning a larger police presence was required. There was pushback by Charlotte Pride, but worries were eased after discussions with CMPD.

Orlando: Marco Rubio Softens Anti-LGBT Rhetoric At Conservative Conference

Sen. Marco Rubio

In an eyebrow raising speech to the Liberty Counsel in Orlando today, virulently anti-LGBT Sen. Marco Rubio appeared to soften his rhetoric against gays and lesbians. His appearance had been criticized for the timing coinciding with the two month anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shooting that left 49 LGBTs dead.

As many know, Rubio has been a devout opponent of LGBT rights including marriage equality.

Today, he told Christian conservatives that they should take note of the consequences of intolerance.

From the New York Times:

Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, who has faced widespread condemnation for agreeing to speak at a conference alongside Christian conservatives who have denounced homosexuality and gay rights, used his speech to the group on Friday to warn of the costs of intolerance.

His remarks in Orlando, Fla., not far from the site of the massacre at a gay nightclub in June, were his most extensive yet in public on the subject of prejudice against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. And he struck a notably softer tone than during his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination, during which he repeatedly reaffirmed his opposition to same-sex marriage.

While he repeated his belief that marriage should not be redefined to include same-sex couples, his speech touched on the history of discrimination against gays, which he asked his audience to consider.

“When it comes to our brothers and our sisters, our fellow Americans, our neighbors in the L.G.B.T. community, we should recognize,” he said, that American history “has been marred by discrimination against and rejection of gays and lesbians.”

He then walked through a list of examples that included discriminatory hiring practices by the federal government, raids of gay establishments by the police and the proliferation of anti-gay slurs.

I can’t imagine that this kind of speech is what the folks at the “Rediscovering God in America” conference were expecting from Rubio.

DNC Denounces Donald Trump, Marco Rubio Attending Anti-LGBT Hate Fest

A joint statement from Democratic National Committee Chair Donna Brazile and DNC LGBT Caucus Chair Earl Fowlkes publicly denounces GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump and Sen. Marco Rubio for participating in today’s anti-LGBT hate fest in Orlando.

“Instead of honoring the memory of those we lost at Pulse two months ago, Donald Trump and Marco Rubio have come to Orlando to headline a gathering of some of the nation’s most incendiary anti-gay bigots.

“We at the DNC join all people of good conscience in expressing our solidarity with the Orlando LGBT community as they continue to grieve the deadliest shooting in American history.

“We suggest Trump and Rubio disavow these anti-gay extremists who have likened gay people to Nazis and characterized HIV/AIDS as divine ‘penalties’ for being gay. Failing to do so will be yet another example of the utter lack of judgment that makes Trump unfit to serve.”

The “Rediscovering God in America Renewal Project”, a gathering of anti-LGBT pastors, is taking place exactly two months after the attack on LGBT Americans at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando which left 49 dead and dozens injured.

Twitter folks are not amused:
