Madonna presents Anderson Cooper with the GLAAD Vito Russo Award

Madonna, dressed in a Boy Scouts uniform, presented Anderson Cooper with the Vito Russo Award at the GLAAD Awards last night. Above is her entire 12 minute introduction speech.

The Vito Russo Award is presented to an openly LGBT media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality.

From Anderson’s acceptance speech:

As a gay person, it’s important for me to remember that all of us come from a community whose stories have for too long been forgotten and ignored, a community whose lives have for too long been ridiculed or misrepresented, a community that in spite of all that has found ways to love and to laugh and to care about one another, a community that has found ways to stand tall and stand up and make ourselves visible.

I know that I’m only able to be on this stage because of generations of gay people who have come before and some of their names are known, but so many have lived and died in silence… There lives never even acknowledged, their love hidden in the shadows, hands furtively held in the dark…

I’ve had many blessings in my life and being gay is certainly one of the greatest blessings. It has allowed me to love and be loved; it has allowed me to open my head and open my heart in ways that I never could have predicted. The ability to love one another, The ability to love another person is one of God’s greatest gifts and I thank God every day for enabling me to give and share love with people in my life, with my family, my friends, and my partner Benjamin.

Ian McKellen on Anderson Cooper: “I’ve never met a gay person who regretted coming out”

Ian McKellen and Anderson Cooper sat down today to talk about The Hobbit, but spent part of the segment talking about being out and proud, and the progress on gay rights in the last 20 years.

Said McKellen, discussing a time when homosexuality was illegal: “I was making love until I was about 30 with my live-in boyfriend and we were breaking the law every time we had sex. Breaking the law. We could have been arrested. All the bad laws have gone. But there’s a long way to go.”

McKellen then praised Obama for coming out for marriage equality, eliciting a big round of applause from the audience.

Anderson Cooper on Bristol Palin

“Anyone who is on a reality show knows that to get attention, you have to have a have a wardrobe malfunction, throw up, have a breakdown — have a storyline. Bristol Palin is a genius because last night she developed a storyline that made her very sympathetic. I am thinking of starting a job fair for people…who need to get jobs [like] Lindsay Lohan, Bristol Palin. I think they just need to get jobs, stop being on TV!” – Anderson Cooper, speaking on his talk show after Bristol “stormed out” of her Dancing With The Stars rehearsal because her dance partner “wasn’t being supportive.” Bristol once again survived last night’s elimination, leading to screams of “FIXED!” on Twitter.

Anderson Cooper calls out Star Jones

With guest co-host Andy Cohen, Anderson talks about how life has been since “coming out.”

Anderson reveals that the only thing that “annoyed” him – actually his mother, who told him – was Star Jones (remember her?) alleging that Anderson’s coming out was a big promo ploy for his TV show.

Anderson had this to say:

If I was wanting to boost ratings, I would have waited to announce it on ‘A Very Special Episode’ that would have been promo’d for weeks and weeks and there would have been commercials … ‘Anderson’s Huge Announcement.'”

As memory serves, in terms of boosting ratings, I seem to recall [Star] hocking her wedding every single day to get free products when she was on ‘The View’ and I seem to recall her lying about her gastric bypass surgery and making everybody else lie about it as well. So for her to suddenly emerge out of the shadows and suddenly attack me for this, I couldn’t believe it.

Anderson Cooper talks about coming out with Kristen Chenoweth

Says Anderson: “It just got to the point where — I’ve been torn for a long time between a desire as a reporter to just do my job and be known as a reporter — and at the same time I do think visibility is important. I do think that the tide of history only moves forward when everyone is fully visible.

“I didn’t want to send a message that there was anything I was ashamed about or unhappy about or not comfortable with. That was the main thing for me. I appreciate all the support I got and all the encouragement. I am the same person I always was, I do the job just the same way.”

CBS News on the evolution of coming out

CBS News This Morning takes a look at the reaction to Anderson Cooper’s coming out and what is says about our changing society.

Much is different in the 15 years since Ellen DeGeneres risked her career by coming out to the world, according to the report.

Since Ellen came out, US households have gotten to know other TV gays on shows like Will & Grace, Modern Family and Desperate Housewives. I think the open portrayal of these characters has helped Americans grow more comfortable with gays in daily life.

Cooper’s announcement on Monday was hardly a surprise to anyone, and his career will likely not take a hit because of it.
