American Idol: Lazaro Arbos
American Idol started up again this week.
I don’t follow the show very closely anymore as I feel like the weekly singing competition has become a bit formulaic.
BUT, as Towleroad points out, we do get some very inspiring stories, still, in the early audition weeks.
Lazaro Arbos has a speech impediment that for years caused him to hardly be able to speak. An outcast at school, his impediment is overcome when it’s time to sing.
He’s adorable, and his story brings the power of music back to center stage.
Mariah Carey on Nicki Minaj – “I didn’t know she sang”
Well, this clip will go down in “diva diss” history.
In an interview with Mariah Carey (which begins by looking back at her 20+ years as a super recording artist, her multitudinous awards and her 200+ million albums sold), Barbra Walters asks Mariah about the reported tension with co-American Idol judge Nicki Minaj.
Check the simple eye-roll and sassy line delivered with perfection at the 4:30 mark – “I didn’t know she sang, I thought she rapped, or whatever…”
Chris Daughtry tweets shirtless photo
American Idol alum Chris Daughtry has been busy at the gym lately.
He tweeted this self-pic today with the caption “Just left the gym! After 5 yrs of neglect, I’m PUMPED to see AB’s again! Hard work and commitment is paying off!”

“Cinderfella” by American Idol Todrick Hall
I love creative people who don’t wait for a project to be handed to them.
Season 9 American Idol contestant Todrick Hall created a retelling of the Cinderella fairy tale with a gay twist and a few other Disney characters thrown in for good measure.
Writes Hall: “I wanted to tell this famous fairy tale in a new and innovative way, combining familiar top 40’s songs with classic Disney melodies. This story speaks volumes and I think that love is as classic as this fairy tale. It’s time for us to legalize love in all shapes and colors.”
The video includes Lance Bass as Prince Charming, Janice Dickinson as the evil stepmother, Shangela and Willam Belli as the stepsisters, plus Glozell as the Fairy Godmother, Kimberly Cole as Jasmine, and Aubrey O’Day as Alice.
Some very funny contemporary references here (“the artist formerly known as Prince Charming”). And who can resist Janice Dickinson at the evil stepmother?

Mariah Carey announced as new judge on American Idol

Fox wasted no time replacing one of their two empty chairs at “American Idol’s” judges panel. The network announced at the Television Critics Association press tour in Hollywood on Monday that Mariah Carey will be joining the singing competition for season 12.
“As a singer, songwriter and producer, it’s going to be fun and rewarding to help find new talent and give back with ‘American Idol,’ ” Mariah Carey said in a statement. “I’m currently in the studio working on my new album and its first single, ‘Triumphant,’ which will be out early next month. I can’t wait to channel my creative energy as a part of this show which is a massive global phenomenon.”
Mariah’s one year contract is reportedly worth $12 million.
