How TV Shifted Its Portrayal Of LGBTQs In The 1990s

In this mini-documentary chronicling LGBTQ representation on television, Matt Baume does an excellent job pulling together the LGBTQ shifts in the tele-landscape on 1990s sitcoms. From Baume:

Is there any show more perfectly suited for a gay ’90s romp than Frasier? When the show the first premiered, television often treated gay characters as a source of fear. But by the time Frasier was in its final season, lots of sitcoms were having a gay old time.

Hit play for a trip down memory lane on how the portrayal of gays changed over a relatively short period and why. No one does this better than Matt.

90s TV stars Joey Lawrence (Blossom), Ian Ziering (Beverly Hills 90210), David Chokachi (Baywatch), and Antonio Sabato Jr. (General Hospital) recently went shirtless for Us Weekly‘s “Best Bodies” issue. In doing so, the men prove the adage that some thing just get better with age.

Watch the hunky men reflect on their high flying days in the 90s in a “behind the scenes” video here.

I should note that both Lawrence and Ziering have headlined in Las Vegas as celebrity guest hosts for Chippendales at the Rio Hotel & Casino.

And I’ve heard rumors Sabato Jr. might be considering some time in the trademark cuffs and collar…. 🙂

Gay Rights in the News: The 1990s

I recently posted a compilation by SuchIsLife on Youtube that captured many of the big news stories in the media concerning gay rights during the 1980s.

SuchIsLife has followed up with news coverage from the 1990s.

Topics include domestic partnership laws, outing public figures, banning gays from the military, gay marriage and Matthew Shepard.

Amazing look back.
