News Round-Up: January 2, 2018

Some news items you might have missed:

• Fitness trainer Terron Beckham (above) was giving you all kinds of super-hero vibes on New Years Day. #woof

• Two men have been arrested in connection with a Christmas holiday murder that left a lesbian couple and their two of their three children dead in upstate New York.

• Watching CNN’s coverage of New Year’s Eve, I felt like Anderson Cooper and new co-host Andy Cohen lacked the right chemistry for what is normally an upbeat broadcast. It looks like a lot of the Twitterverse agreed with my assessment. But CNN’s Don Lemon kissing his bf on the air was fun 🙂

• The Advocate has an excellent article on flexing the power of the LGBT community’s trillion dollar economic clout. First step, support LGBT-owned companies. Second, read the article.

• After filling in for over a month for the departed Matt Lauer (fired for alleged sexual misconduct), Hoda Kotb was named co-anchor of “Today” on this morning. She will headline the 7-9AM segment of the morning show with Savannah Guthrie, as well as continue to host the 10AM hour with Kathie Lee Gifford.

• Platinum-selling recording artist BØRNS releases his latest track, “God Save Our Young Blood feat. Lana Del Rey,” ahead of his sophomore album Blue Madonna which is set for release on January 12, 2018.

If you were to suppose BØRNS and Lana Del Rey seems like a totally logical teaming, you’d be right. Listen below.

Coal Mining Deaths Almost Double Under Trump Administration

(Image via Flickr)

Guess what happens when you repeal safety regulations?

From The Hill:

Workplace deaths in the coal mining industry increased last year to their highest point in three years.

A total of 15 miners died on the job in 2017, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data show, compared with eight in 2016.

That year saw the fewest mining deaths since records began.

West Virginia had the most miner deaths in 2017 with 8. That was the total number of miner-related deaths in the entire U.S. in 2016.

Gee, do you think it has anything to do with all those pesky regulations Donald Trump is so proud of rolling back?

New Ad Tells Same-Sex Couples To “Hold Tight”

Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) is responsible for this new ad which highlights the anxiety many LGBT couples may experience when engaging in the simple act of holding hands

The message from ANZ?

“Hold tight.”

I can admit that hubby Michael and I rarely hold hands having lived a lifetime of fear of being gay-bashed.

I’m not proud of that fact, but thanks to societal pressures it almost seems like a “forced” display of affection for us now. Maybe that will change…

Thanks to ANZ for sending this message.

Trump Takes Credit For World-Wide Air Travel Safety

This morning Donald Trump found another statistic for which to take credit.

In 2017, there were no commercial air travel-related deaths anywhere in the world.

The Trumpster immediately shouldered the credit tweeting, “Since taking office I have been very strict on Commercial Aviation. Good news – it was just reported that there were Zero deaths in 2017, the best and safest year on record!”

There were two crashes on New Year’s Eve but were not officially counted in the report as both aircraft weighed under 5,700kg — the threshold for the report from aviation consultancy firm To70.

In that the report was about world-wide air travel, I’m not sure how much influence Trump has over all that.

But as several smart folks noted, there hasn’t been a death related to commercial air flight in the U.S. since 2009.

Donald “Back To Work” Trump Spends 7th Consecutive Day Playing Golf

Just before 9am this morning, Donald Trump arrived at his Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, for his 7th consecutive day playing golf.

This marks his 91st day at a golf course since taking offuce.

You may recall Trump tweeted to the world Christmas night he would be getting “back to work” the next morning.

Before becoming president, Trump promised his followers there would be “no time” for golf if he won the election. In fact, he said he’d practically never leave the White House.

And he wonders why folks call him a liar…? Let’s go to the video tape.

Trump Takes Credit Yet Again For The Obama Economy

Donald Trump took to Twitter on the last day of 2017 to boast yet again about the economy:

If the Dems (Crooked Hillary) got elected, your stocks would be down 50% from values on Election Day. Now they have a great future – and just beginning!

Why would smart voters want to put Democrats in Congress in 2018 Election when their policies will totally kill the great wealth created during the months since the Election. People are much better off now not to mention ISIS, VA, Judges, Strong Border, 2nd A, Tax Cuts & more?

A few facts are missing from the Trumpster’s perspective here.

Most importantly the fact that he inherited an already healthy economy with a 4.7% unemployment rate and a stock market that had more than doubled.

And then the smart kids chimed in:
