SNL: Melissa McCarthy Kills As White Press Sec. Sean Spicer

Even though the SNL cast has lots of white guys who could take on lampooning White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, the satirical show reached out to an inspired choice to lampoon the beleaguered spokesman: Melissa McCarthy.

In a ‘take no prisoners’ guest appearance, McCarthy was almost unrecognizable as she took to the podium. Down to the ill-fitted suit, McCarthy gave a commanding, provocative performance.

Great satire happens when the subject’s characteristics are elevated to a new level, and McCarthy landed in that hilarious sweet spot.

“I’m here to swallow gum, and I’m here to take names.”

9th Circuit Court Of Appeals Denies Trump Stay On Immigration Ruling

(image via Instagram)

Does this mean the 9th Circuit  is now a “so-called” appeals court?

Instead of staying U.S. Federal Judge Robart’s temporary restraining order on Trump’s immigration EO, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals requested arguments from both sides by Monday to fully consider the motion.

From the New York Times:

A federal appeals court early Sunday rejected a request by the Justice Department to immediately restore President Trump’s targeted travel ban, deepening a legal showdown over his authority to tighten the nation’s borders in the name of protecting Americans from terrorism.

In the legal back and forth over the travel ban, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco said a reply from the Trump administration was now due on Monday.

The ruling meant that refugees and travelers from seven predominantly Muslim nations — Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen — who were barred by an executive order signed by the president on Jan. 27 would, for now, continue to be able to enter the country.

President Bannon Trump won’t be pleased.

Trump On Voter Fraud: “Many People Have Come Out And Said I Am Right”

In a preview of his upcoming interview with Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly, President Trump defends his claim that 3-5 million illegal votes were cast for Hillary Clinton in California and New York, saying, “Many people have come out and said I am right.”

It’s worth noting many, many people have come out and said he is dead wrong.

Just saying.

Justice Department Files Appeal To 9th Circuit Court Regarding Trump Immigration Policy

The Department of Justice has filed an appeal to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to lift a temporary restraining order by U.S. Federal Judge James Robart concerning President Trump’s executive order on immigration policy.

The EO, issued a week ago, banned travel to the US from seven Muslim-majority countries and suspending refugee entry to the US. The Washington state Attorney General filed suit in his state saying the travel ban was unconstitutional. Judge Robart, a Bush appointee, agreed.

Considering how quickly the Trump administration has been moving, I’m surprised it took almost 24 hours to file the appeal.

The Department of Homeland Security announced it had suspended all actions to implement the immigration order and would resume standard inspections of travelers as it did prior to the signing of the travel ban.

New York City: LGBT Solidarity Rally At Stonewall Inn Today

Thousands are attending an LGBT Solidarity Rally this afternoon organized by City Councilman Corey Johnson at the Stonewall Inn in New York City.

The rally received responses from more than 36,000 people on its Facebook event page.

From the New Civil Rights Movement:

The rally, scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern, is backed by a coalition of more than 60 groups, including pro-immigration, refugee support and LGBT organizations. In addition to Johnson, it is being co-sponsored by dozens of other lawmakers including New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

“Join us in front of the Stonewall Inn as we stand in solidarity with every immigrant, asylum seeker, refugee and every person impacted by Donald Trump’s illegal, immoral, unconstitutional and un-American executive orders,” the Facebook page for the rally states. “We will also speak out against Trump’s selection of the most anti-LGBT nominees and appointees in modern history.”

As of Saturday afternoon, 11,000 people planned to attend the rally, with another 25,000 listed as “interested.”

The Guardian notes that the rally is being fueled in part by rumors this week that Trump planned to rescind President Barack Obama’s LGBT nondiscrimination order for contractors, or sign a new anti-LGBT “religious freedom” executive order.

Woof Of The Week

Woof of the week comes from Big Bear – the mountain.

Reality TV personality Rodiney Santiago sent shirtless greetings from Big Bear, California via Instagram this past week as he hit the slopes.

It’s not about getting on top of the world knowing that you won. It’s about the climbing and feeling that that way has made you strong 💪😎 🇧🇷Não é sobre chegar no topo do mundo e saber que venceu . É sobre escalar e sentir que o caminho te fortaleceu 💪😎 #ski #bigbearmountain #funsunday

Hypocrisy: Trump Plays First Round Of Golf Three Months Earlier Than Obama

Today, for the first time since being sworn in as president, Donald Trump played his first round of golf at Trump International Golf Club outside West Palm Beach.

This is notable only because it’s nearly three months sooner than President Obama played his first round in 2009.

According to Mark Knoller of CBS News, Obama played his first round of golf on April 26, 2009. And President George W. Bush hit the “presidential” links on July 3, 2001.

Remember when Donald Trump incessantly derided President Obama for playing golf?

And this time, at a campaign rally in December 2015, when the Trumpster called out Obama for having “played more golf than Tiger Woods.”

“It was reported today [Obama] played 250 rounds of golf and he’s going to be in Hawaii, I think did they say for three weeks?” Trump said. “Two hundred and fifty rounds, that’s more than a guy who plays in the PGA Tour plays. He played more golf last year than Tiger Woods. We don’t have time for this. We have to work. … I don’t have time for that. I love golf, I think it’s one of the greats, but I don’t have time.”

Politico reported yesterday that the president’s trip this weekend to his Mar-A-Lago resort could cost taxpayers over $3 million.

Now, let’s take one more trip in the way back machine, shall we?

Reddit User Shares His Closeted Father’s Gay Anthem “I Dreamed A Dream”

Reddit user TheBrotherOfTyler recently shared his slow, heartbreaking realization that his Mormon father, who eventually divorced and died of a drug overdose, lived most of his life secretly closeted.

When I was a kid, it was not uncommon to find my mom playing the piano at our house and my dad standing next to her signing “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables. He would modify the words of the song to sing it from a straight male perspective rather than a straight female perspective, which is how it’s sung in the play/movie (i.e., he changed it to “she slept a summer by my side” from “he slept a summer by my side”).

When I was 14, my parents separated, and a short time later I put the pieces together and figured out my dad was gay. My dad died just over a year later from a drug overdose.

Fast forward 10 years or so, and I hear the song for the first time in a long time. As I was listening to the song all of the sudden a feeling came over me (it must have been the spirit) and I realized why my dad loved the song so much. It truly expressed how he felt as a straight LDS man living secretly as a gay man. It was touching and heartbreaking at the same time. It made me feel a tremendous amount of love for him. And it made me sad that he had to switch the lyrics to continue hiding his true self.

Here are some of the lyrics:

He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came
And still I dream he’ll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather
I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I’m living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed

I hadn’t heard the recording of “I Dreamed A Dream” from the original London production of Les Miserables in years. I’d forgotten how tender Patti LuPone began the song.
