Texas: Father carves on 6 year old son’s back because 12-12-12 is ‘holy day’

A Texas father is in police custody after he told 911 operators he carved a large pentagram in his six-year old son’s back because today, December 12, 2012 is a “holy day,” marked by the numbers 12-12-12.

“I shed some innocent blood,” Brent Troy Bartel, 39, says to police in the audio recording of his 911 call, below.

“What do you mean, sir?” the 911 operator asks, as David Edwards at the Raw Story reports:

“I inscribed a pentagram on my son,” the man explains.

“Why did you do that?” the operator presses.

“Because it’s a holy day,” the caller replies before hanging up.

Officers dispatched to Bartel’s home discovered the 6-year-old boy shivering without a shirt.

“There was a large pentagram carved into his back which covered the majority of his back,” a news release from Richland Hills police Sgt. Nathan Stringer said. “The child was found cold and shivering in the cold so officers wrapped him in a jacket.”

Investigators later confiscated a box cutter, which they suspected was used to carve the religious symbol.

“The father’s call to 911 was placed at 12:10 a.m., just minutes after the day 12-12-12 began,” writes NBC News. “[However] the date is not known to have any holy or religious significance.”

Nonetheless, the news agency notes that the date, along with 12-12-12, has “drawn attention from numerologists and those concerned with doomsday prophecy.”

ESPN sports hosts suspended for mocking transgendered athlete

Steve Czaban and Andy Pollin

Transgender woman Gabrielle Ludwig, a Desert Storm veteran, got to fulfill her life-long wishes by going back to college and playing for Contra Costa Community College’s basketball team at age 50.

But that didn’t stop ESPN radio hosts Steve Czaban and Andy Pollin from brutally degrading her experience and mocking her appearance and calling her “he/she” and “it.”

According to Outsports, the radio hosts also say transgender people should not play sports, and conveyed disgusted reactions regarding her appearance.

They have now been suspended. Wrote the station in a statement:

We strongly believe two of our employees crossed the line when discussing a transsexual person on their program last Thursday. Such intolerance and insensitivity will never be tolerated by this company. Due to the nature of this conversation, the pair have been temporarily removed from ESPN980’s Sports Reporters program.

Writes GLAAD: “GLAAD has extended an offer to sit down with Czaban and Pollin and leaders from the transgender community to talk about the issues that affect transgender Americans, particularly those who are involved in athletics. It is important that the lesson they take away from this isn’t simply ‘don’t make fun of transgender people or you’ll get suspended.’  LGBT equality and inclusion in sports will never improve unless we are able to use these moments to educate each other and see each other as human beings.”

Atlanta Mayor announces support for marriage equality

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed announced his support for marriage equality yesterday with this statement:

“Today marks an important day as I announce my support for marriage equality. It is well known that I have gone through a good bit of reflection on this issue, but listening to the stories of so many people that I know and care about has strengthened my belief that marriage is a fundamental right for everyone. Loving couples, regardless of their sexual orientation, should have the right to marry whomever they want. By signing this resolution, I pledge my support to marriage equality for same-sex couples, consistent with equal protection under the law provided under the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution…I believe in tolerance and acceptance, regardless of a person’s race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity. That creed has been a guiding force for me throughout my life, as reflected by my actions and votes as a lifelong Democrat and elected official in the state of Georgia for more than 14 years.”

The mayor had been under added pressure after the City Council, led by City Council member Alex Wan, passed a resolution last week in support of marriage equality.

Uruguay House Overwhelmingly Approves Same-Sex Marriage By 81-6 Vote

Uruguay voted today on same-sex marriage:

Legalizing gay marriage has long been a goal of the Broad Front, which has ample majorities in both houses of Congress. After the lower house votes, the project would go to the Senate. President Jose Mujica hopes to sign it into law early next year.

The “Marriage Equality Law” also would replace Uruguay’s 1912 divorce law, which gave only women, and not their husbands, the right to renounce marriage vows without cause. In the early 20th Century, Uruguay’s lawmakers saw this as an equalizer, since men at the time held all the economic and social power in a marriage, historian Gerardo Caetano said.

“A hundred years later, with all the changes that have occurred in Uruguayan society, this argument has fallen of its own accord,” Caetano said Tuesday. “It’s absolutely logical now that divorces can happen if either party wants it. And I really think it won’t have much of an impact.”

The AP adds that “The bill also would clarify rules for adoption and in-vitro fertilization, and eliminate the words ‘marido y mujer’ (husband and woman) in marriage contracts, referring instead to the gender neutral ‘contrayentes’ (contracting parties)” and the law “would let couples, gay or straight, decide whose surname goes first when they name their children.”

Uruguay joins The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Iceland, Argentina and Denmark as the 12th in the world to have state-wide marriage equality.

Uruguay House votes in landslide for same-sex marriage

Rex Wockner and Andres Duque have the good news:

Eighty-one of the 99 members of Uruguay’s House of Representatives voted to legalize same-sex marriage this evening. Twelve members of the chamber were not present for the vote. The bill now advances to the Senate, where support is equally strong, according to LGBT activists. President José Mujica plans to sign the measure into law in early 2013. “Very happy here!” said Álvaro Queiruga of the LGBT lobby group Colectivo Ovejas Negras (Black Sheep Collective). Uruguay will be the 12th nation to offer same-sex marriage nationwide. Same-sex marriage is legal in Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden and Mexico (where same-sex marriage is legal in the Federal District, i.e. Mexico City, and in the state of Oaxaca, and those marriages are recognized nationwide).

GOP quiet on SCOTUS’ marriage equality hearings

Politico notes that thus far the leadership of the Republican Party has not responded to Friday’s Supreme Court decisions.

House Republican leaders had a uniform response to the Supreme Court’s decision to take up gay marriage: silence. The high court’s decision last week to hear two cases relating to same-sex marriage puts that issue at the center of the national debate. And it does so at an exceedingly awkward time for Republicans, many of whom are trying to downplay or moderate their party’s views on social issues to chart a path back to electoral success.

“I’m personally grateful to Speaker Boehner for being willing to defend the law, but it’s clear GOP elites don’t want to talk about it and want to keep it as quiet as possible,” said Maggie Gallagher, a founder of the National Organization for Marriage and a fellow at the conservative American Principles Project. “That’s so obvious, I don’t see any point in pretending otherwise.” Tom McClusky of the Family Research Council said he assumes from conversations he’s had with congressional aides that lawmakers are pleased the high court is taking up the issue. “But there’s just radio silence” publicly, McClusky said. “I was disappointed there wasn’t more from the Hill.”

In related news, Maggie Gallagher said yesterday that she expects SCOTUS to overturn DOMA but uphold Prop 8.
