World News Daily says Neil Patrick Harris Super Bowl ad pushes a “gay agenda”

Calling Neil Patrick Harris an “outspoken homosexual actor,” World News Daily says that the CBS sitcom star was used in spots advertising next month’s Super Bowl designed to “mock Christianity.”

In the ad, Harris has blackeye paint that lists the date of the football game. WND posits that the spot is mocking Christian football player Tim Tebow, who became notorious after placing Bible verses in his blackeye paint.

According to the WND “report,” “One football fan who watched the CBS promo Sunday made the connection between Harris and Tebow, saying, ‘They’re pushing a gay agenda by using him, and they’re mocking Christians at the same time.'”

It’s worth pointing out that many professional athletes have used eyeblack to share a public message. Plus – not many people would equate a Super Bowl ad with promoting a “gay agenda.”

Calling itself “America’s Independent News Network,” WND publishes a magazine called Whistleblower that declares on its cover that Barack Obama is “The First Muslim President.” Read more here.

President Obama nominates former Sen. Chuck Hagel for Secretary of Defense

President Obama has officially nominated former Sen. Chuck Hagel to replace outgoing Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta.

Ironically, there are already opponents to the nomination from both the right and left sides of the political spectrum.

From the L.A. Times: “Speaking on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina predicted that Hagel would be “the most antagonistic secretary of Defense toward the state of Israel in our nation’s history” and called his pick by President Obama an “in-your-face nomination.” And Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, while promising that Hagel would get a “fair hearing,” said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he would get “tough questions” in a confirmation process.”

The Log Cabin Republicans have taken out their second full-page ad, this time in the Washington Post, attacking Hagel on his gay rights record. The ad also addresses Hagel’s recent apology for anti-gay remarks, calling it “too little, too late.”  See the first one, from the NYT, here.

Army veteran and OutServe-SLDN Executive Director Allyson Robinson issued the following statement today:

“Senator Hagel is an exceptionally qualified nominee for Secretary of Defense and we believe, if confirmed, he will be an effective leader for the Pentagon. Significant challenges remain for LGBT service members and their families, however, and it’s long overdue that our Secretary address those challenges.

“Our message to the next Secretary of Defense would be the same, no matter who was nominated and confirmed. A commitment to support LGBT service members and their families must be a commitment to action. It’s past time to extend all benefits available to married same-sex military couples and families while the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is still on the books. It’s past time to put in place military equal opportunity and nondiscrimination protections so that all qualified Americans who wish to serve this nation in uniform may do so without fear of harassment or discrimination. We look forward in the weeks ahead to discussing these and other issues important to LGBT service members and their families with Senator Hagel and his designees, and to working with him should he be confirmed to create equitable conditions for all those who serve our nation so bravely in uniform.”

SCOTUS schedules same-sex marriage arguments

From LegalTimes: The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in two pending same-sex marriage cases on March 26 and March 27.

The justices slotted arguments in Hollingsworth v. Perry, a challenge involving California’s Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriage, for March 26, and in U.S. v. Windsor, concerning the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), on March 27.

In the Perry case, supporters of Prop. 8 challenge a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. They ask the justices whether the 14th Amendment’s equal protection clause prohibits a state from defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman.

In Windsor, the justices will decide whether Section 3 of DOMA, establishing that marriage, for all federal purposes, is the union between a man and woman, violates the Fifth Amendment’s equal protection guarantee.

Son of Sen. Rand Paul arrested on charges of drunk and disorderly

The 19 year-old son of Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) was arrested at the Charlotte airport yesterday on charges of drunk and disorderly conduct.

William Hilton Paul arrived in Charlotte, N.C., on a U.S. Airways flight from Lexington, Ky., where his father is a U.S. senator. According to Lt. Blake Hollar with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Paul was intoxicated when he arrived at the airport and said “he was possibly served alcohol on the flight.” The teenager was arrested by police and booked into the Mecklenburg County Jail, charged with three misdemeanors: underage consumption, disorderly conduct, and being intoxicated and disruptive. While in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, reports say William Hilton Paul identified himself as the son of Sen. Rand Paul.

The younger Paul, who is a student at the University of Kentucky, was taken into custody shortly after his flight landed around 11AM.

“He was possibly served alcohol on the flight,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Lt. Blake Hollar said.

A spokesperson for Sen. Paul has issued a statement: “Senator Paul is a national public figure and subject to scrutiny in the public arena, however, as many parents with teenagers would understand, his family should be afforded the privacy and respect they deserve in a situation such as this.” Yesterday Sen. Paul acknowledged that he is considering a presidential run in 2016.

Matt Dallas of “Kyle XY” quietly comes out, announces engagement

Last night, the handsome “Kyle XY” star quietly tweeted his coming out: “Starting off the year with a new fiancé, @bluehamilton. A great way to kick off 2013! pic.twitter.com/FQ9y4tHe“

Hamilton is a California-based singer-songwriter. The two have been quietly dating since 2009.

Coming out via simple statements seems to be the new Hollywood norm.  And I like it.

Anti-gay Pastor Scott Lively sued under international law for inciting persecution of gays

On Monday, January 7, lawyers representing Sexual Minorities Uganda will make oral arguments in a landmark case that aims to hold the American founder of Abiding Truth Ministries, anti-gay Scott Lively, responsible for inciting persecution of LGBT people in Uganda.

SMUG v. Scott Lively was filed in federal district court in March 2012, and alleges that the Evangelical pastor’s efforts in Uganda to equate homosexuality with the Nazis, Rwandan genocide, pedophilia and more, violate international human rights law.

Many observers lay Uganda’s still pending “kill the gays” bill squarely at Scott Lively’s feet.

The case is the first of its kind, and relies on a 200-year-old law known as the Alien Tort Statute, which gives “survivors of egregious human rights abuses, wherever committed, the right to sue the perpetrators in the United States,” according to the Center for Justice and Accountability.

Video: Modern Bears at Phoenix book signing

Accidental Bear points up this great video covering Modern Bears‘ Travis Smith & Chris Bale at a book signing in Phoenix for their book Guide For The Modern Bear.

I had the chance to speak to Travis and Chris recently on The Candi & Randy Show and they are a LOT of fun. Plus, I love their eye for mid-century modern/retro design.

Check out the video above, and you can find their book on Amazon.
