Sign of the day: Yeah Yeah Yeahs have had enough of smart phone video at their concerts

A major pet peeve of mine has been the exponentially exploding practice of concert goers holding their smart phones up – often the entire concert – to video record the show.

Apparently, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have had enough of it too.  The above sign was posted at the band’s appearance at Webster Hall a few nights ago.

From Spin:

Karen O reiterated the band’s request at the top of the second song (an incredible rendition of Show Your Bones‘ “Gold Lion”), telling the crowd to snap away as much as they liked for the next few minutes, but then “put those motherfuckers away.”

Spin tweeted out a pic of the sign and response was huge, and very supportive.

A few months ago, I sat behind some idiot at a concert who held their iPad –  a big-ass iPad! – up in the air blocking my view, so she could record the show.

Meanwhile, NO ONE who’s doing that is getting anything for their money.  They’ve paid to attend a concert they are watching through a small camera screen.  They get home and all they’ve got is crappy footage.

AND they are ruining the music experience for those around them.

Bravo to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Simon Cowell “couldn’t care less” if people think he’s gay

“If I was living 200 years ago in a coal mine, maybe, but I work in possibly the gayest industry in the world! Music and TV!It would make no difference to my life or my career. A lot of my friends are gay, but I’m not and don’t even think that way any more… I couldn’t care less (if people think I’m gay) because it’s nothing to be ashamed of. It feels like such an antiquated question now.”

Gay families will not be included in immigration reform bill

After review of the initial text of  it looks like gay couples/families will not be included in the current immigration reform bill.

From the Washington Blade:

Immigration Equality Executive Director Rachel Tiven on Monday said she does not expect same-sex couples will be included in the comprehensive immigration reform bill a bi-partisan group of senators could potentially introduce by the end of the week.

“We are not expecting LGBT families to be included in the Gang of 8 bill,” she told the Washington Blade during a conference call ahead of a rally in support of comprehensive immigration reform on Wednesday that is expected to draw tens of thousands of people to the U.S. Capitol. “That in our minds means that of course the bill is incomplete.”

President Obama’s original proposal did include a provision for addressing gay bi-national couples.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler confirmed to the Blade that “LGBT-specific language will likely not appear” in the bill. Says Nadler, “This is disappointing but not particularly surprising.”

The issue isn’t dead in the water as yet, though.  Once the bill hits the Senate floor for debate, it will be possible to revisit the LGBT-inclusive language.

Stephen Colbert signs Bill Clinton up for Twitter

Stephen Colbert discusses social media with President Clinton.

Clinton says he doesn’t tweet because he might be “insecure” about it: “I think I’m sort of insecure, like what if you tweet and nobody tweets back? There’s nothing worse than a friendless tweeter. You’re just wandering around in cyberspace.”

So, to nudge him a bit, Colbert informs the former Prez that he’s already signed Clinton up on Twitter  – @PrezBillyJeff – and then goes on to send a few tweets out for him.

Glenn Beck: Marriage equality is about freedom and “the principle of it is right”

Glenn Beck took a sanity pill recently and gets to a place of clarity regarding marriage equality:

“We have been so foolish. It’s not about gays, it’s not about homosexuals. It’s about freedom. The reason why they have won is because they’ve made it about freedom….By not getting it and turning in to it soon enough, you’ve been painted into the corner of a bigot. That’s why they won. Because the principle of it is right. The principle is easy to understand: “Who are you to say?…”

President Obama urges Congress to vote on common sense gun measures

President Obama traveled to Connecticut yesterday to make his case for common sense gun policy after the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school.

The President is asking for a simple up or down vote on the proposals currently put before Congress.

From the YouTube page:

“I know many of you in Newtown wondered if the rest of us would live up to the promises we made in those dark days … once the television trucks left, once the candles flickered out, once the teddy bears were gathered up,” Obama was to say in prepared remarks. “We will not walk away from the promise we’ve made.”

Obama is hoping to salvage the proposal for background checks on all gun buyers to try to ensure that criminals and others prohibited from buying firearms cannot get them. There are not yet enough votes in the Senate for expanded background checks as Democrats seek Republican votes.

Around a dozen Republican senators led by Rand Paul of Kentucky have threatened to use procedural tactics to try to prevent any votes on the gun measures.

“You deserve better,” Obama will say. “You deserve a vote.”

19 year old reminds conservative economist that he’s “not a scientist”

Stephen Moore, conservative economist and Wall Street Journal columnist learned the hard way that spin doesn’t work in the face of facts. Bravo!

At 1:16, 19-year-old Zack Kopplin, science advocate and history student, offers up the only response one should give whenever a pundit starts talking about cutting science.

And at 2:25, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Bill Maher both pile on and fact-check Mr. Moore’s spin again.

IF you are wondering why we funded snail mating habits, it’s to prevent children in developing countries from getting parasitic worms and stuff.

Yeah, there was a good reason. IF you consider research to prevent kids from parasitic worms a good reason.

I do.
