Retired pro soccer player Robbie Rogers discusses being gay in professional sports

Professional soccer player Robbie Rogers sat down with ABC News correspondent Amy Robach to discuss being gay in professional sports. The interview will air on ABC News’ “Nightline” Monday evening, April 15.

A former member of the U.S. National team and professional player in England, Rogers allowed “Nightline” to travel with him as he saw his family for the first time since coming out earlier this year. Although Rogers has retired, a return to the field in the U.S. would make him the only openly gay player in any major league sport.

Christian Broadcasting Network is NOT happy about marriage equality in France

From the video report: “The Socialist government of President Francois Hollande will essentially destroy and then redefine the traditional institution of marriage for the benefit of a relatively tiny part of the population.  As is the case in most western nations, homosexuals account for less than 5% of the population in France.”

Polls show a majority of French citizens support marriage equality.

Catch enough buzz words in there?  Socialist?  Homosexual? Destroy/redefine traditional marriage.

It must be killing Brian Brown that he lost this one.

However, on the bright side, he did get some nice all-expenses paid trips to Paris.  How nice for him.

Irish Constitutional Convention approves allowing referendum on marriage equality

By a vote of 79-18, the Irish Constitutional Convention has approved a referendum for marriage equality according to the Irish Examiner.

Convention Chairman Tom Arnold announced the results of the vote to enthusiastic applause.

“I would like to thank all of the participants who contributed to the Constitutional Convention’s same-sex marriage discussion,” Mr Arnold commented.

“I am very pleased that proceedings were conducted in a fair and transparent manner with all sides getting an opportunity to make their respective cases.

“This weekend’s discussions have been both passionate and thoughtful, both heartfelt and rigorous.”

A report will now be drafted and sent to the Government, which will have four months with which to respond.  If the Government agrees with the recommendation, a timeline for the referendum will be decided and scheduled.

A 2012 poll shows strong support for marriage equality in Ireland – 75% approve of making civil marriage legal for same-sex couples.  In addition, the same poll shows 2 out of 3 polled say same-sex marriage will strengthen society as a whole.

Dogs rule: Emerson’s journey to home

In 2011, 75% of all households that acquired a dog chose not to adopt.  The #1 reason stems from the negative perceptions they have of shelter pets.

Emerson’s history is a sad one.

He was neglected and emotionally abused for years. Time and time again he would run away ending up at the shelter. And time and time again, his owners would pick him up and bring him home. The last time he ran away and ended up at the shelter, his owners thought better and left him there.

Thanks to Annie Hart and Bill Foundation, Emerson found his second lease on life. He had his wounds tended do but more than that he found a happy home in Michaela.

Cyndi Lauper chats KINKY BOOTS & summer tour with Jay Leno

Cyndi Lauper did the “sofa chat” thing this week with Jay Leno covering topics like her new hit Broadway show “Kinky Boots” (she wrote the score) and her upcoming summer tour.

As a tribute to her 1983 solo debut album, “She’s So Unusual,” Lauper will perform all the tracks, including Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Time After Time, She Bop, Money Changes Everything and All Through the Night. The album’s success led Lauper to a Grammy win as best new artist.

“Kinky Boots” recently opened to very strong reviews and will clearly be a contender for many theater awards this season.

Sixteen years ago today: Ellen DeGeneres comes out

Sixteen years ago today, Ellen DeGeneres became even more famous than her comedy as she became one of the highest profile Hollywood personalities to come out.

In the 1980s she was the first female comedian to be asked to join Johnny Carson on the couch of The Tonight Show.

Her sitcom “Ellen” was a huge success up to April 30, 1997 when both she and her character publicly came out. Although the show was renewed for one more season, “parental advisory” warnings were aired before each episode.

She didn’t work for almost three years, but then the country began to slowing “evolve” on the issue of acceptance of gays.

The turning point for her reemergence can probably be credited to her very successful hosting gig for the 2001 Primetime Emmy Awards.  “What would bug the Taliban more than seeing a gay woman in a suit surrounded by Jews?” she asked during the show. Upbeat and funny, she received rave reviews and found a new fanbase.

And with 2003 giving her the twin showcases of both “Finding Nemo” and her self-titled talk show, Ellen found that the courage to be yourself can lead to happiness.

Let’s hear it for Ellen!

K-mart: “Ship your pants”

Ok, so – it looks like Kmart is of the mind, “F**k it, we’re not Target and we’re not Walmart… we’re @#$%*! Kmart.”  Thus, this ad campaign…

If you can’t find what you’re looking for at a K-Mart store, you can find it online and have it sent to your home. Kmart has introduced its “Ship My Pants” ad… which you might make you laugh either out loud or not.

Come on – you know that’s funny in a third grade humor kind of way…

Want to ship your pants too? Can’t find what you’re looking for in store, a sales associate can find it on Kmart.com and ship it to you for free!

Nike looks to endorse 1st major league “out” athlete

The first openly gay pro athlete, whether he be in football, baseball, or basketball could very well land sponsorship deals worth millions of dollars.  And a promise from Nike is already on the table, Bloomberg reports:

Nike asked former Phoenix Suns executive (and openly gay) Rick Welts to deliver a message to anyone thinking about becoming the first openly gay athlete in major U.S. team sports — the company wants him as an endorser.

“They made it clear to me Nike would embrace it,” Welts, 60, now president of the National Basketball Association’s Golden State Warriors, said in a telephone interview. “The player who does it, they’re going to be amazed at the additional opportunities that are put on the table, not the ones that are taken off.”

Nike isn’t the only one who sees the upside of coming out.  Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban called the opportunity “a marketing goldmine for all involved.”

Gay marketing strategist Bob Witeck agreed: “the first openly gay team-sport athlete — provided he’s a recognizable name — would earn millions in endorsements and speaking engagements…”

Just this week, the National Hockey League aligned itself with gay-rights organization You Can Play Project, an organization that promotes equality in sports, to develop “what appears to be the most comprehensive measure by a major men’s league in support of gay rights,” according to The New York Times.
