The good news is the Labor Department reported Friday that the unemployment rate dropped to 8.6% in November, the lowest since March 2009 and a sharp improvement from 9.0% in October. As you can see from the chart above showing the unemployment rate under President Obama, while unemployment shot up in the first several months of his presidency – before his policies could affect any change – the rate has been dropping.
The bad news is part of this month’s drop in the unemployment rate comes from long term unemployed folks who are discouraged from looking and stop. Those people aren’t factored into the “unemployed” number.
And employers added only 120,000 jobs in October — well off the number that economists say is needed just to keep pace with population growth.
But the drop in the unemployment number is at least a good psychological boost to many, who need to feel things are at least moving in the right direction.
I think the important thing isn’t one month’s report. What needs to happen is America needs to see several months of steady improvement, so that folks can wrap their heads around the idea that things are improving AND small business owners – who we are told over and over need to see something stable before they begin hiring again – get their “stabilization cue” and actual start creating jobs again.
And then, Americans might start feeling better about the economy. Right now, that’s not happening.

Jansing earlier asked Capehart about his Washington Post column entitled “Stupid People Are Ruining America” — named after a Herman Cain quip. In his piece, Capehart writes, ““Stupid people are ruining America,” said Herman Cain this week. Truer words have never been spoken by the former front runner for the Republican nomination.”
“Stupid people would try to have you believe that a 13-year affair with a woman who is not your wife to whom you’re giving money over the last 2 1/2 years and sharing text messages — some as early as 4:26 in the morning — is just your normal, everyday friendship.”

Newt Gingrich stood by his controversial stance against certain laws governing child labor Thursday saying his previous comments were “spun out of control” by “the left.”
“Really poor children in really poor neighborhoods have no habits of working and have nobody around them who works,” the former House speaker told an audience at the headquarters for Nationwide Insurance.
He then seemed to imply that a young, poor individual’s only likely source of possible income would be from breaking the law.
“They have no habit of ‘I do this and you give me cash’– unless it’s illegal.”
Gingrich added that most successful businesspeople he knows started work “early” and made some kind of money when they were kids, whether it was by babysitting or mowing lawns.
Almost two weeks ago Gingrich called laws preventing child labor “truly stupid” and suggested students take the jobs of many janitors.
In light of the British Foreign Ministry pulling all U.K. nationals out of the British embassy in Tehran, GOP presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann told a crowd in Waverly, Iowa, today that she would close the U.S. embassy in Iran.
One small, tiny note: The U.S. hasn’t had an embassy in Tehran since 1980. Following the Iranian Hostage Crisis, where 52 Americans were held for 444 days, the United States cut all diplomatic ties.
According to reports, Bachmann applauded the U.K.’s move, adding, “That’s exactly what I would do [if I were president]. We wouldn’t have an embassy in Iran. I wouldn’t allow that to be there.

From Eonline‘s The Awful Truth: Even though most of the filming has wrapped on Steven Soderbergh’s stripper flick Magic Mike, Channing Tatum and his band of buffed-up boys are prepping to slip on their g-strings and hit the stage again in the next few weeks.
The Magic Mike crew will be adding additional dance numbers! And you know what that means… “More stripping!”
A source this close to the movie tells us when we asked what the latest details on the picture were. “They’re going to be doing additional shooting in the club in a couple of weeks.”

The producers of HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING announced today that Michael Urie (“Ugly Betty,” The Temperamentals) will make his Broadway debut as Bud Frump, beginning Tuesday, January 24, 2012, for 6 months through Sunday, July 1, 2012.
Urie will co-star with Nick Jonas and Beau Bridges. Tickets for Urie’s engagement in HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING are now on sale.
Michael Urie is currently starring as Yepikhodov in the Classic Stage Company’s production of Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard. He also recently starred in the Signature Theatre Company’s revival of Angels in America as Prior Walter, as well as the 2009’s The Temperamentals, in which he originated the role of Rudi Gernreich and received a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actor. Also in New York, Michael has worked with The Nerve Ensemble at HERE, The Foundry, HB Playwrights, and in WTC VIEW during the Fringe Festival, which went on to become a film from director/writer Brian Sloan.
Michael was seen opposite Vanessa Williams for four seasons on ABCs hit series UGLY BETTY as ‘Marc.’
I saw Michael in the Angels In America revival and he was perfection. As I’m certain he will be in HOW TO SUCCEED. Make sure you see him in the show.
