Cher offends Adelaide for apparently selling “key to the city”
From Raw Story: Cher, who has earned both Oscar and Grammy glory in a career which saw her sell more than 100 million records, is apparently selling the key to the city of Adelaide in Australia.
Officials in southern Australia’s Adelaide voiced their disappointment Saturday at revelations that US singer Cher had apparently put her key to the city up for sale on Internet auction house eBay.
The key and accompanying memorial plaque was being sold online by a user called Authentic_Cher who claims to be the musician’s “personal consignor” selling her personal effects.
It had attracted a top ask of US$19,700 by Saturday afternoon, with four more days of bidding to go.
But the move offended officials in the quiet city of some 1.2 million people, with Adelaide mayor Stephen Yarwood saying he was “exceptionally disappointed.”
The man who presented Cher the key, former mayor Steve Condous, said the award had been in recognition of her performance at the 1990 Formula One Grand Prix and the fact that she “added a lot of charisma” to the event.
“I’m disappointed. I would have thought that getting the key to a city like Adelaide would have had some value to her, but obviously it doesn’t because she wouldn’t have got rid of it,” said Condous.
Used shoes and clothing reportedly belonging to the star were also being auctioned, along with a “personally owned photograph” of Cher greeting Queen Elizabeth II.
Ted Nugent fined and sentenced to 2yrs probation
Recently in the news for urging NRA members “to ride into that battlefield and chop their heads off in November,” Ted Nugent has agreed to pay a $10,000 fine and accept two years probation for illegally killing an Alaskan black bear during the filming of an episode for his hunting reality show. He also has a film a PSA about hunting.
“This PSA will discuss the importance of a hunter’s responsibility in knowing the rules and regulations of the hunting activities that they engage in, which is subject to the review and final approval, prior to any broadcast, by a representative of the United States Attorney’s Office in the District of Alaska,” the agreement says.
Nugent, who signed the document April 14, also agreed to pay the state $600 for the bear that was taken illegally, according to the agreement. He would still need to enter the plea in court and have the plea be approved by a judge.

President Obama endorses Student Non-Discrimination Act
The White House has just announced that it is endorsing the Safe Schools Improvement Act (SSIA) and the Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA), two bills that will protect LGBT students in the U.S.
“The President and his Administration have taken many steps to address the issue of bullying,” White House spokesperson Shin Inouye informed Metro Weekly. “He is proud to support the Student Non-Discrimination Act, introduced by Senator Franken and Congressman Polis, and the Safe Schools Improvement Act, introduced by Senator Casey and Congresswoman Linda Sanchez. These bills will help ensure that all students are safe and healthy and can learn in environments free from discrimination, bullying and harassment.”
Metro Weekly further explains the two pieces of legislation that have just received Obama’s support:
The SSIA would amend the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act to include bullying- and harassment-prevention programs, including ones based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The SNDA, modeled after Title IX, would add sexual orientation and gender identity to federal education nondiscrimination law.
The timing of the news couldn’t be better for the White House, which is fighting off harsh criticism after refusing to protect LGBT workers from discrimination in federal contracting employment.

Pew Research: Top issues for voters in 2012 election
Notice the bottom three issues are social issues. For those politicians who love to use the phrase “what Americans want is…” they should take note. Stop demonizing gay marriage, birth control and abortion. “What Americans want” is to hear a civil discourse on the economy and jobs.
Maybe now that Mitt Romney and his super-PAC have decimated his opponents he’ll start to talk about how he would like to create jobs rather than tear down the other guy.
I’d much rather hear specifics than general rhetoric and negative campaigning. Put stuff out there that shows me why you’re the better choice.
