Awesome, courageous and inspiring sermon by Rev. Frederick D. Haynes III of the Friendship-West Baptist Church.
The Reverend addressed fellow pastors and members of his congregation for their outrage at President Obama’s endorsement of marriage equality while the congregation stood up and shouted their disapproval at him.
From Haynes’ sermon:
“You should have seen preachers just scurrying and hurrying to call a conference call to call out the President for what he had declared as a personal opinion. He said it was a personal opinion. But whatever you like to ostracize other people it’s because there’s a fear that you have yourself, and the fear that you have finds itself rooted in an ignorance of other people. Or in a projection of your issues. Either there’s ignorance or there is a projection of your issues…It really blows my mind how outraged you are. You are so outraged over what the President said. First of all, take a chill pill. Take a deep breath, everything’s gonna be all right.”
“Have you ever read the Gospel and heard Jesus say anything about homosexuality?…Black folk can’t even deal with homosexuality because we got issues with sexuality. And because we got issues with sexuality we can’t have a healthy discussion about homosexuality. Why, why do you get so upset?”
Talk about a successful run! The chatty mechanics on NPR’s “Car Talk” are pulling in to the garage.
Tom and Ray Magliozzi said Friday they will stop making new episodes of their comic auto advice show at the end of September – 25 years after “Car Talk” began in Boston. The show airs every Saturday morning and is National Public Radio’s most popular program.
Although lots of folks – including me – can host a radio show on the internet today and have it available on iTunes, these guys started back when doing your own radio show was not so easy or “do it yourself.”
Older brother Tom is 74 years old and the brothers say it’s time to stop and smell the cappuccino.
“Car Talk” isn’t disappearing, however. NPR says repurposed episodes will continue to air every week with material culled from the show’s archives.
ThinkProgress caught up with Eagle Scout Zach Wahls at Netroots Nation about today’s announcement that the Boy Scouts of America will reconsider its policy discriminating against the LGBT community. He discusses his new initiative, Scouts for Equality, through which he is rallying other scouts to pressure BSA.
Said Wahls:
“It’s not a smokescreen. This proposal was made after Jen Tyrrell’s pettion on Change.org. So even though this has been brought up in the past, it’s never gotten nearly the level of attention that it has today. And as another departure from the past, there’s never been a group — which I actually launched in coordination with a number of other Eagle Scouts today called Scouts For Equality — and we’re going to be working with a number of different groups to really build a community of scouts — Eagle scouts, former scout leaders, that sort of thing — we’re really going to work toward making this policy change.”

The CW has just released an extended preview of their highly anticipated series “Arrow.” However, this Green Arrow (Stephen Amell) is way darker than the one you remember from “Smallville.”
After a shipwreck at sea, he finds himself on an island alone for five years and something happens to him there that changes him forever. It also did something pretty fantastic to his abs.
Watch for ARROW this Fall on the CW.
Twenty years ago today David Drake began his moving and powerful run in his Obie Award winning one man show “The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me.”
I had the privilege of standing by for David in the off-Broadway show Pageant the summer before, and had attended readings of “The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me” during development. But I was not prepared for the play that awaited audiences at the Perry Street Theater in NYC.
I saw the show many times, and was blown away at the passion, depth and creativity of not only the writing but David’s courageous performance.
When David ended his run in the show I auditioned and was called back to possibly “replace” – as if anyone really could… While it wasn’t meant to be, being called back for such an important piece of writing is a favorite theatre memory for me.
As regular readers of The Randy Report know, today David is still creating memorable characters like his current creation “Tawny Heatherton.” Gifted, I tell you, gifted!
We can’t go back in time, but do yourself a favor and either buy the book or better – buy the DVD and treat yourself to some powerful talent.
I grew up watching every episode of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. So many great messages in the show.
