An independent panel of 19 experts for the FDA unanimously voted in favor of a half-dose booster shot of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine for those 65 and older as well as adults who are at high risk due to medical conditions or occupational workplace. https://twitter.com/DrEricDing/status/1448731340527095813 From the Washington Post:
The recommendation mirrors the eligibility criteria for the Pfizer-BioNTech booster, which was authorized in September. Nearly 70 million Americans have received both doses of the Moderna vaccine.
The vote comes after a full-day examination of data on the safety and effectiveness of a booster, and the recommendation will now be considered by FDA officials, who are expected to reach a decision on the Moderna booster within days.
According to the data presented to the panel, the Moderna two-shot regimen reportedly remains very effective more than five months after getting the second shot. The vaccine was shown to be 93% effective in preventing all COVID-19 illness and 98% effective in preventing severe cases. A study of 300 people showed that antibody levels began to drop at the 6-8 month mark, but a half dose restored the antibodies. The FDA advisory committee will consider booster shots for recipients of the J&J vaccine tomorrow. Next Wednesday, a similar advisory committee to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will meet to consider Moderna booster shots. https://twitter.com/nprpolitics/status/1448730932303876098
