Out UK singer Calum Scott has released this beautifully re-imagined version of Whitney Houston’s 1987 classic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” dueting with the icon herself.
This. Is. Gorgeous.
The stripped-down arrangement and intimate production seamlessly blends the impeccable vocal performances by Houston and Scott resulting in new musical magic.
And not to get all ‘music nerdy,’ but notice how perfectly clean Scott’s entrances and cutoffs are matching Whitney perfectly throughout the song.
The music video is a terrific companion to the track giving us light, airy visuals from the original video release along with performance shots of Scott.
The new track was created with the full approval of Pat Houston, Whitney’s sister-in-law and executor of her estate.
From AP News:
After hearing what Scott could do with the song — taking it from its up-tempo pop spirit to a big-hearted ballad, while also taking into consideration that 2025 marks the 40th anniversary of Houston’s music career — Pat Houston was on board. It was yet another opportunity for celebration.
“I said, you know what, this is a no-brainer. This is the Houston style. So, let’s go with this,” she said.
“Whitney was a balladeer and that’s why we all fell in love with her,” she continued. “And Calum turned the song into a beautiful ballad.”
On his Instagram, Scott shares, “Being able to sing with Whitney’s voice, one of the most iconic voices we’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing, is just surreal.”
“I hope that when you listen to this, you feel the joy, love and spirit that Whitney poured into everything that she sang,” he adds. “Hearing her sing this song like this is truly a gift to us all!”
