Out pop star Sam Smith drops their soulful new single, “To Be Free,” a graceful ballad featuring backing by The TwoCity Chorus.
Smith and the stirring choral voices are accompanied by just a single acoustic guitar, underscoring the tender intimacy and vulnerability of the track.
The music video depicts a crowd of joyful people running and dancing through the halls of Brooklyn’s Warsaw concert venue.
“I’ve never had a recording experience like I did making this song,” Smith shares about the track. “It’s one vocal and guitar take from start to finish — one live performance of me and my friend Simon Aldred in a pure state of music and expression.”
“I wrote it five years ago while writing my last album Gloria and then parked it because I knew it was not a song for that album,” they add. “It was created during a time in my life where I became free within myself.”
Smith has announced a 24-date residency at the Warsaw beginning in October and running through December.
