King Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand has given royal assent (signed into law) a new law legalizing same-sex marriage. After a 120 day waiting period, Thailand will become the first nation in Southeast Asia to recognize same-sex marriages. From the South China Morning Post:
Activists hailed a “monumental step” as Thailand becomes only the third place in Asia where same-sex couples can tie the knot, after Taiwan and Nepal.
The law on marriage now uses gender-neutral terms in place of “men”, “women”, “husbands” and “wives”, and also grants adoption and inheritance rights to same-sex couples.
Thailand’s Parliament passed the law in June. LGBTQ advocates are planning a mass wedding in Bangkok for January 22, the first day the law will take effect.
