Virginia: Republican Eric Cantor loses his primary race to Tea Party challenger

In a stunning upset, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia has lost in the Republican primary.

From NBC News:

With more than 75 percent of precincts reporting, the AP called economics professor Dave Brat the surprise winner of the GOP nomination for Virginia’s 7th congressional district.

Cantor, who serves as the House majority leader, heavily outspent Brat and was widely expected to survive the challenge from the right.

Brat painted the seven-term congressman as a Washington insider who has become too liberal to represent the Richmond-area district. He accused Cantor of supporting immigration reform that would give “amnesty” to those living in the United State illegally.

As House Majority Leader, Cantor is the second most powerful member of the House of Representatives.

Tea Party blogger arrested for sneaking into opponent’s wife’s hospital room

Clayton Thomas Kelly

Tea party blogger Clayton Thomas Kelly has been arrested for sneaking into an adult care facility and taking a photo of US Sen. Thad Cochran’s (R-MS) wife, who is being treated for Alzheimer’s:

Clayton Thomas Kelly runs a political blog called Constitutional Clayton, where he posted a story April 26 attacking Cochran and supporting state Sen. Chris McDaniel, who’s challenging Cochran in the state’s GOP Senate primary this year.

The piece included a picture taken bedside in Rose Cochran’s room at the nursing home, where she has lived since 2000.

In a press release, the Madison Police Department said that Kelly “had illegally and improperly obtained an image of a vulnerable adult resident without their consent for his own benefit.” He was charged with exploitation of a vulnerable adult, and his bond was set at $100,000.

In a statement, the Cochrans’ attorney, Donald Clark, said his clients’ “privacy and dignity have been violated,” according to the Clarion-Ledger.

McDaniel has denounced the shenanigans, but Cochran’s campaign isn’t completely convinced McDaniel’s camp is completely in the clear. Apparently, McDaniel’s campaign manager knew about the arrest before news reports.

Ah, the Tea Party – the gift that keeps giving…

Teabaggers demand proof that Cliven Bundy made racist quote – Here it is

After quotes of Cliven Bundy’s views on “negroes” went viral, the right wing Twittersphere went insane denouncing that Bundy never said such things and if so, where’s the video? Where’s the audio.

See below for your viewing.

(Ah, facts can be so inconvenient).

Christian Values Congressman Vance McAllister busted kissing a staffer on video

Freshman Rep. Vance McAllister (R-LA), who ran on a “faith, family, and country” platform, and promised a vigorous “defense of natural marriage” has been caught on video making out with a young female staffer. Local news outlets are speculating about an affair.

McAllister issued this statement asking for privacy while attempting to get himself out of the dog house:

There’s no doubt I’ve fallen short and I’m asking for forgiveness. I’m asking for forgiveness from God, my wife, my kids, my staff and my constituents who elected me to serve. Trust is something I know has to be earned whether you’re a husband, a father or a congressman. I promise to do everything I can to earn back the trust of everyone I’ve disappointed. From day one, I’ve always tried to be an honest man. I ran for Congress to make a difference and not just be another politician.

McAllister was endorsed by the Duck Dynasty clan during his campaign.  McAllister famously invited Willie Robertson of Duck Dynasty to be his guest at the most recent State of the Union address.

I wonder what the Robertson family thinks about this?

House votes 221-201 to raise debt limit to March 2015

After three years of threats and government closings, the House Republicans came to their senses and allowed a ‘clean’ vote on raising the debt limit until March 2015.

The vote – 221-201 – relied primarily on Democrats to carry the legislation, the first debt ceiling increase since 2009 that was not attached to other measures. Only 28 Republicans voted yes. But it effectively ended a three-year, Tea Party-fueled era when a series of budget showdowns raised the threat of debt defaults and government shutdowns, rattled economic confidence and brought serious scrutiny from an international community questioning Washington’s ability to govern.

The vote, brought by Speaker of the House John Boehner, angered Tea Party conservatives.

Jenny Beth Martin, co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots, said that Boehner should be replaced for his “lack of leadership.”

Promoting an online petition to dismiss Boehner, Martin said, “A clean debt ceiling is a complete capitulation on the speaker’s part and demonstrates that he has lost the ability to lead the House of Representatives, let alone his own party. It is time for him to go.”

Obama dogs’ pic ticks off teabaggers

The pic was tweeted yesterday by First Lady Michelle Obama as the White House prepped for a dinner state dinner with French President Francois Hollande.

Apparently, this pic of presidential dogs Bo and Sunny Obama is driving teabaggers crazy.

Somehow, taking a picture of the Obama dogs equates Michelle Obama with Marie Antoinette. As if the First Lady was ACTUALLY going to feed the dogs at the table???

SRSLY.

Take a look below at just one example…

House Speaker John Boehner slaps back at the Tea Party over budget deal

It would appear that House Speaker John Boehner has had enough of the Tea Party rhetoric.

Upon the announcement that Sen. Patty Murray and Rep. Paul Ryan have worked out a proposed budget deal, Boehner was asked if he was concerned about “major conservative groups who have rejected the deal.” Boehner had this to say:

“You mean the groups that came out and opposed it before they ever saw it?” he asked. ”They’re using our members, and they’re using the American people for their own goals. This is ridiculous. Listen, if you’re for more deficit reduction, you’re for this agreement.”

Clearly, Boehner is done bowing to tea party folks like Heritage Action that pushed the party into a 16-day shutdown two months ago.

Congress may vote on Sen. Patty Murray and Rep. Paul Ryan’s deal as soon as the end of this week. The compromise bill softens the blow of some of the sequester cuts for the next two years, and cuts the deficit by $23 billion.
