Grizabella was the wrong cat to die.

After seeing CATS the Musical for the first time in July of 2016, podcast host Mike Abrams was filled with a whirlwind of emotions. He was amused, confused, and a little angry.

Almost exactly three years later when the 2019 CATS movie trailer came out, Mike had enough. It was time to speak his truth – Grizabella was the wrong Cat to Die at the Jellicle Ball.

In this podcast series, Mike interviews CATS cast members, CATS superfans, CATS haters, and explores the backstories of the Jellicle characters all to make a case for why they were more worthy to ascend to the Heavyside Layer than Grizabella.

I’ve written in the past that in 1986 my life was changed when I was cast as the ‘Magical Mr. Mistoffelees’ in a brand new National Touring company of CATS.

To give some perspective, CATS was, in terms of popularity, the Hamilton of its day. All over America, everywhere we went, we were sold out months before we arrived.

Me back in 1986 as ‘the Magical Mr. Mistoffelees’

Fast forward to Fall 2020, my cast reunited in a virtual event performing material from the show to raise money for The Actors Fund. At the time, as “the journalist” of the group, folks asked if I would try and help with the publicity aspect.

At the time, I came across Mike’s very entertaining podcast where, initially, he opined on which cat actually should have/deserved to go to the Heaviside Layer at the end of the show.

I booked three of my cast mates to go on the podcast and share, not only about our event, but their time ‘back in the day.’  Mike had interviewed cats from the Broadway revival, but no one from the original days in the 1980s.

Listening to his character by character in the beginning episodes, I was charmed to find that my character was – in his opinion – the cat that really deserved that next “Jellicle” life.

Some weeks ago, he invited me to come on the show and chat. I believe I’m the first ‘Mistoffelees’ to be interviewed on the show, which is quite the honor.

This was much fun to revisit the

Cohen Apologizes To Stormy Daniels For ‘Needless Pain’

For the first time, Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen speaks with porn star Stormy Daniels in an hourlong chat on Cohen’s podcast, Mea Culpa.

Via HuffPost:

Seeking to bury the hatchet, Cohen interviews Daniels in the latest episode of his podcast, “Mea Culpa,” in which the two commiserate over life-altering experiences with Trump and his recent departure from office.

Cohen, in keeping with the title of his program, apologizes for “the needless pain” he put Daniels through when he arranged a $130,000 payment during the 2016 presidential campaign to keep her quiet about an alleged dalliance with Trump a decade earlier. Trump has denied the affair.

“Both of our stories will be forever linked with Donald Trump, but also with one another,” Cohen tells her. “Thanks for giving me a second chance.”

Also in the podcast chat, Daniels refers to the 2008 sexual encounter with Trump “the worst 90 seconds of my life, for sure, because it just made me hate myself.”

She shares that she hadn’t planned on having sex with the Donald. At one point in the tryst she apparently pondered how to escape the room, thinking “I could definitely outrun him.”

Cohen has been recording the podcast from his living room in Manhattan since being released from prison last summer. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and health concerns in crowded prisons, he’s being allowed to serve out the rest of his sentence at home.

Podcast: ‘An Older Gay Guy Show’ Chats Me Up About A Life In The Theater

My actual headshot from back in the day…

Ok, a post about … me 🙂

A couple of months ago, Joey Hernandez, of the uber-popular podcast An Older Gay Guy Show, interviewed me about the work I do here on The Randy Report.

Joey and I have been a virtual mutual admiration society on Twitter for years. I love his podcast, I never miss it, and he’s been a big supporter of mine.

Over the years, An Older Gay Guy Show has received many award nominations and twice been a finalist (wow) for The People’s Choice Podcast Awards.

During our chat, though, he realized that I’d had this whole other life as a dancer/singer/actor on Broadway and he asked if I’d come back and share some of that journey.

We ended up chatting so much about my beginnings in the theater, moving to NYC, and my differents jobs that he’s sharing it as a two-part show (those that know me are aware I can share a story or two…).

Hit the play button to hear me chat on how my career in theater began, including the not so great, early salad days before I finally got a break.

And this is just Part One, folks…LOL

And if you enjoy, you can click over to The Podcast Awards to nominate An Older Gay Guy Show in the Best LGBTQ category as well as the People’s Choice Award.

Jwan Yosef (via Instagram)

Some news items you might have missed:

ManCrush Monday: That time when Ricky Martin’s other half, Jwan Yosef (above), showed off his ‘baby lifting arms.’ #dang

Gold Derby: Openly gay former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg has been entered for Emmy consideration in the category of Best Comedy Guest Actor for his guest-hosting stint on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

CNN: The body of former GLEE actress Naya Rivera, 33, who was missing since Wednesday, has been found floating in a Southern California lake. Rivera’s role on GLEE gave queer Puerto Rican representation to millions. She is the third original GLEE cast member to die. In 2013, Cory Monteith died of a drug overdose and Mark Stalling committed suicide in 2018 after being found guilty of possessing child porn.

TheaterMania: Hamilton has become the first cast recording to reach the top two on the Billboard 200 albums chart since 1969 thanks to the musical’s premiere on Disney+. In 1969, the original cast recording of Hair spent 13 weeks in the no. 1 slot. Hamilton had previously peaked in the no. 3 position back in 2016, tying with The Book of Mormon.

Miami Herald: Florida resident Joseph Fucheck is facing criminal charges for waving a pistol at a Black homeowner in North Miami-Dade while claiming to be a 35-year Navy SEAL veteran. Except – it was a decades-old lie perpetrated by Fucheck. The Navy SEAL Museum in Fort Pierce, which maintains paperwork for all SEALs since World War II, has no record of him.

CBS17: An Arkansas police officer told a colleague he would ‘shoot any protesters’ who might come to his door. But Calvin Salyers, 33, has now been charged with manslaughter after shooting through his door on June 3 killing a fellow police officer who dropped by to pick up a patrol car.

Podcast of the Day: A podcast about gay TV,  Gayest Episode Ever, explores LGBT+ themed one-off episodes that classic sitcoms (like The Golden Girls, Frasier, and Cheers) would do back in the day when it was rare to see queer characters represented on broadcast television.

The podcast – hosted by Drew Mackie, a journalist, and Glen Lakin, a screenwriter – offers insight into the evolution of queer visibility, gay rights, and how culture can both affect — and BE affected by — what we see on TV.

The episode below dissects a 1977 episode of Maude when Bea Arthur’s title character argued with her neighbor Arthur over the opening of a gay bar in town.

Flip The Script: I’m The Guest On ‘An Older Gay Guy Show’

Hey folks, happy Saturday!

Like most journalists, it’s not often I make myself the story. But since The Randy Report is a blog, there is some leeway, and readers have learned a little bit about me over the years.

My friend Joey Hernandez at An Older Gay Guy Show podcast asked to chat with me about how The Randy Report came to be and the daily ins-and-outs of blogging in the world today. From the time I get to my desk each day to how I choose my topics to WHY I even do this, Joey drills down to all things ‘Randy Report.’

I’ve listened to Joey’s award-nominated podcast for years. Aimed toward life after 40 among gay guys, Joey talks and laughs about the trials and tribulations of growing older, sex, health, fitness, TV and films, personal stories and more. He’s funny, candid and with episodes titled “The Craziest Place I’ve Ever Had Sex,” he’s a great listen.

If you’re looking for a new podcast to check out – DEFINITELY check out An Older Gay Guy Show.

Sean Hayes on Seth Rudetsky’s Back to School podcast

Some news items you might have missed:

Podcast: Before Sean Hayes (above) was winning Emmy awards, he was winning the Golden Crutch award for being the clumsiest person in his high school drama department. Hear how he earned the title, plus how he coped with getting hazed, on this week’s episode of Seth Rudetsky’s Back to School

Variety: Crew members from Ellen DeGeneres’ long-running daytime talk show are outraged having received no written communication from the producers. The crew was further incensed by the show’s recent hire of an outside, non-union tech company to help DeGeneres tape remotely from her home in California. And then, nearly all crew members were told to brace for a 60% reduction in pay, even as the show continues to air.

Out Music: Harrison Barnes’ new music video, “Play Me,” kicks off with a dash of Britney Spears’ “Baby One More Time” before spinning into his own boy-band-tastic pop bop. The track has a cute hook, and Barnes totally hits it on the choreography.

PEOPLE: James Corden’s modern, live-action remake of the classic fairytale Cinderella, featuring Tony/Grammy Award winner Billy Porter as a genderless fairy godmother, will make its debut February 5, 2021.

The Wrap: TV show host Phil “Dr. Phil” McGraw really stepped in it when he downplayed the seriousness of the coronavirus pandemic on Thursday’s episode of “The Ingraham Angle” on Fox News, declaring 360,000 people a year from swimming pools, but we don’t shut the country down for that. Funny thing – you can’t ‘catch’ a drowning and pass it on to others in a grocery store.

ABC News: After Donald Trump took to Twitter to tell New York state Gov. Andrew Cuomo to spend “more time ‘doing’ and less time ‘complaining,” a reporter asked the governor his thoughts during a live press conference. Said Cuomo, “First of all, If he’s sitting home watching TV, maybe HE should get up and go to work, right?” Watch Cuomo’s epic takedown below.
