On Saturday, December 27, the Oprah Winfrey Network will air the documentary, “Michael Sam.” The film chronicles the first year roller coaster ride of the first out athlete to be drafted in the NFL.
Immediately following the documentary, Oprah will air an exclusive “Oprah Prime” one-on-one interview with Michael Sam. This will be Sam’s first TV interview since being cut from the Dallas Cowboys practice squad.
Originally intended to be a reality/docu-series following Michael Sam during his first season with the NFL, the project was shelved so that Sam could focus on football exclusively. The series has now been edited into a 90 minute documentary.
The OWN documentary follows the former University of Missouri college football star as he enters the world of professional football and vies for a spot on an NFL team. Cameras get up close and personal with Michael as he openly discusses a childhood fraught with tragedy and poverty, as well as his emotional decision to come out as a gay man in the world of pro sports. The documentary captures the moment when Michael was drafted by the St. Louis Rams, the intense media scrutiny that immediately followed, and Michael’s struggle to stay focused despite the pressure and chaos. Additionally, the documentary explores Michael’s relationship with his boyfriend Vito and the challenge of balancing his personal life alongside his pursuit of NFL stardom of Michael Sam, who made history when he became the first openly gay football player drafted into the NFL.
The documentary will air Saturday, December 27 at 9:00 p.m. ET.
Oprah Winfrey has announced plans to make a documentary series on Michael Sam becoming the first openly gay player in NFL history:
Over the weekend, Sam was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the final round of the draft. His story has dominated the news in recent days including debate over his kissing his boyfriend on live television after learning he had made history.
‘Like every player out there working to make a team right now, my focus is on playing football to the very best of my ability,’ Sam said in a statement Wednesday (14 May). ‘I am determined.’
He added: ‘If seeing my story helps somebody else accept who they are and to go for their dreams too, that’s great. I am thankful to Oprah for her support and excited to work together.’
The series, which is currently untitled, will be made for the Oprah Winfrey Network by Pilgrim Studios and Amy Rice.
Said Winfrey in a statement: ‘We are honored that Michael is trusting us with his private journey in this moment that has not only made history but will shape it forever.’
She says the series ‘promises to spark valuable, important discussion on life in America today. Acceptance and illumination start here.’
10 Kids, 2 Dads, which airs tonight, August 18 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, takes viewers to a conservative town about 20 miles outside of Detroit, where gay couple Clint and Bryan are daddy and papa to 10 adopted sons from at-risk backgrounds.
When Clint and Bryan decided to start a family, they never dreamed that they’d end up with 10 kids. At equal turns funny and moving, this series follows a real-life Modern Family as they raise their adopted children in a chaotic, yet loving environment.
From light-hearted moments of painting the house or teaching the kids to drive, to heavier subjects like when one of the kids deals with bullying, this looks to be an honest and revealing look at family life in America.
Tune in for the premiere of 10 Kids, 2 Dads with back-to-back episodes Saturday, August 18th on OWN.
