For years, audiences of the nightly fireworks show at Disneyland and Disney World would hear, “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, dreamers of all ages.” Last week, the announcement was shortened to simply, “Good evening, dreamers of all ages.” According to Deadline. the new, genderless announcement will be incorporated at other Disney parks including Tokyo Disneyland. The change comes amid other efforts to update or remove outdated portions of rides. Some of the amusements being tweaked include racially-insensitive aspects of the Jungle Cruise and Splash Mountain. The company has also recently relaxed its rules on employee expression in regard to hairstyles, jewelry, nails, and tattoos. The Miami Herald reports the updates were well-received by LGBTQ guests and workers, but apparently some conservatives chose to be offended. One person tweeted, “Disney gets more ridiculous every day.” “I HATE THAT. BRING IT BACK NOW!!!” wrote another. I guess I’m surprised that anyone would bother to even write out a tweet over such a minor thing. #snowflakes

Conservatives Outraged Over Plans For Unisex Bathrooms

The city of Portland, Oregon, is currently undertaking a whopping $195,000,000 renovation of the Portland Municipal Building and one of the steps being taken is to redesign all of the restrooms to be gender-neutral. One result is the removal of all urinals. Local NBC News affiliate KGW8 reports that Chief Administrative Officer Tom Rinehart sent an email to employees explaining, “We will continue to have gender-specific (male and female) multi-stall restrooms that are readily available to any employee that prefers to use one. But, there will be no urinals in any restroom in the building.” Rinehart added, “This will give us the flexibility we need for any future changes in signage.” The plan – when all work is completed – will result in: • The building’s 1st, 3rd, and 15th floors will have large multi-stall bathrooms that men and women will use together • The other floors will have separate men’s and women’s bathrooms • Every floor will have at least one gender-neutral bathroom Pat Dooris, the KGW8 reporter who covered the story, makes a point to include “Gender and bathroom use has been a big deal when it comes to those who are transgender or gender fluid.” Well, yeah, if you are transgender and want to use a bathroom without being accosted, I would say that’s a ‘big deal.’ UCLA’s Williams Institute says research shows 9 percent of transgender people have been attacked using a public facility. Dooris also includes an interview with conservative talk show host Lars Larson who is outraged over the changes. “I think it’s ridiculous,” Larson tells Dooris. “First of all, I know that it already makes a lot of people uncomfortable. Secondly, its gonna take up a lot more space and third- anyone whose ever been to any public event – have you seen the line at the ladies’ room? Do you see any line at the men’s room?” When Larson says “makes a lot of people uncomfortable,” what he’s referring to are trans people getting to use a public bathroom. Larson also threw in a half-hearted pitch for water conservation noting that urinals use less water. Because conservatives are such environmental warriors? While Larson seems fixated on the idea that men will suddenly have to cope with lines at the restrooms, studies have shown that gender-neutral bathrooms actually creates ‘potty parity’ as they equalize the average time men and women wait to use the facilities. Plus, society has shifted and evolved on ‘bathroom policy’ for decades. For instance, until the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, it was legal to segregate bathrooms by race. It was 1990 when laws were finally passed to ensure bathrooms were accessible for people with disabilities or who use wheelchairs. And let’s face it: if unisex bathrooms were fine for the folks in the late 1990s TV series Ally McBeal, why can’t we handle them today?

Doing a quick search of the interwebs, it seems the only folks who are upset about the new bathrooms at the Portland Building are far-right conservative websites looking for something to get upset about. What do you think, readers? As new construction and building renovations occur, are gender-neutral bathrooms a step forward? (source: KGW8)

Céline Dion Creates New Gender-Neutral Fashion Line For Kids

Céline Dion in new ad for her new non-binary kids clothing line

Céline Dion has collaborated with fashion brand NUNUNU to develop a gender neutral line of children’s clothing.

The concept is to allow children to find their own personal style rather than be boxed into a traditional pink vs blue mindset.

Asserting that “fashion builds concepts deep within our minds,” the company says the new line (titled, CELINUNUNU) “aims to free the forces of creativity and imagination in children, nurturing equality and flexibility of thought that enable kids to fully embrace who they are.”

And speaking of ‘embracing who they are,’ the new ad spot for the fashion line casts Celine as a badass binary-busting ninja.

In the video, we see the “My Heart Will Go On” singer enter what appears to be a gender-segregated maternity ward.

Celine provides voiceover narration for the spot:

Our children. They are not really our children. as we are all just links in a never-ending chain that is life. For us, they are everything. But in reality, we are only a fraction of their universe. We miss the past. They dream of tomorrow. We may thrust them forward into the future. But the course will always be theirs to choose.

Reaching into her bag, she finds black glitter confetti (of course) and blows it across the room transforming the ward into a gender-neutral space. The children are suddenly decked out in bold black and white, non-gendered fashions.

Celine explained to PEOPLE that the new line “lets children choose outside stereotypes and norms so they can bring from within their own tastes and preferences.”

“We help them feel free, creative, inspired, respectful of one another and happy in the world,” she adds.

With that in mind, the line offers ‘fashion-forward’ looks utilizing bold prints (alphabets, stars, plus signs) in a palette of black, white, yellow and denim. The plus sign represents equality.

Most of the clothing is priced between $50 and $100, although there is a $290 leather jacket available for your 3-year-old to grow out of in a few months.

Back in the maternity ward, though, security has shown up and our heroine attempts to escape. But, curses, she’s felled by a flying tackle.

In a last ditch effort, she attempts to play the celeb card as she’s cuffed and being taken away: “Guys, relax, easy – I’m Celine Dion.”

But, alas, to no avail. The cop replies, “Yeah, girl, and I’m Beyonce.”

“Moschino Barbie” Commercial Breaks Gender Stereotypes

The new Moschino Barbie is a huge hit (currently sold-out!), and its commercial is breaking boundaries by featuring a young boy in it.

“Moschino Barbie is so fierce!” the boy screams as he and two female friends laud the doll, done up in designer Jeremy Scott’s sleek glamour. Barbie’s cellphone goes off and the male child says, “It’s for you, Moschino Barbie,” before winking at the camera. Watch the ad below.

Facebook Troll Serves Up Snark To Haters Over Target’s New “Gender Neutral” Policy

Ok, this is really hysterical.

You can imagine how – just sometimes – folks on the end of customer service would love to really speak their minds to over the top, outraged customers.

Check this out from Adweek:

That dynamic played out in particularly rogue fashion on Target’s Facebook page this week. As the retailer received a steady stream of nasty comments from people upset about its move toward gender-neutral in-store labeling, Facebook user Mike Melgaard posed as Target with a fake Facebook account—Ask ForHelp, with a bull’s-eye profile pic—and began excoriating the haters with comically sarcastic replies.

He got away with it for about 16 hours, too, commenting on about 50 posts before the fake account was shut down.

I’ve posted two of Melgaard’s responses here. Head over to Adweek for many more. Some funny stuff 🙂

Franklin Graham Is Mad Target Stores Won’t Label Items Pink Or Blue

Franklin Graham, who it was recently revealed earns $880,000 a year working for a charity organization, posted this little tirade over Target’s announcement that the department store will no longer identify some items as gender-specific.

How that’s a bad thing, I don’t know.

From the well-heeled charity leader himself via Facebook:

“I think Target may be forgetting who has made their stores strong.

“It’s not gender-neutral people out there—it’s working American families, fathers and mothers with boys and girls they love.

“What’s next? Are they going to try to make people believe that pink or blue baby showers are politically incorrect?

“I have news for them and for everyone else—God created two different genders. Jesus said, ‘Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female’ (Matthew 19:4). You can’t get any clearer than that.

“If you agree, share in the comments below—and let Target know what you think. Let them know that you are perfectly willing to shop where the genders God created are appreciated. (1-800-440-0680) Target is way off-target on this one!”
