Stepping away from the computer for a few minutes of pool time on this sunny, slow Saturday. Hard to believe Bruno the wonder dog (above) has been gone for over two years now, but every memory of him makes me smile. He enjoyed these days with me like no one. And he loved to cruise around the pool – even if his paws did rip up his float a bit. Thinking good thoughts for all of you this afternoon. #morewine

Today is National Dog Day! Celebrate!
National Dog Day was begun in 2004 to recognize the massive number of shelter pets looking for a good home and to encourage their adoption. If you’re looking for a companion of your own and ready for the responsibility, take a look at the ASPCA adoption site or Petfinder.com to find a shelter near you.
Here’s just a few pics of our furry family members over the years including Bruno (daddy dog) and puppies Tyler, Bandit and Bear (who are now 10 years old but we still call “puppies”).
I can’t imagine life without dogs.

As I shared earlier this week, Bruno the wonder dog passed away on Tuesday.
We’re doing as well as can be expected. The energy, the quiet – so totally unfamiliar.
I feel like I’ve lived the past 15 years in technicolor and now I’ve been switched to black and white mode.

But the good news is technology is my friend. And even before we had smart phones with a camera in each of our pockets, we had digital cameras.
I came across the video below that I’d made back in late June of 2002 when Bruno first came into my life in New York City.
OMG, that personality was evident from day one.
I’m doing ok, folks. I’m adjusting, taking lots of deep breaths.
And I’m celebrating The Brun.

With heavy hearts, Michael and I want to share that Bruno the wonder dog passed away yesterday afternoon. In the 24 hours since his crossing the rainbow bridge, we’ve quietly begun to process this seismic shift in our lives. Bruno was “the” alpha in the house. Every moment was about his enormous, funny, charming and confident personality. I’ve said for years that Bruno was my best friend, and I mean that. He loved me; he made me feel special; we shared a connection that cannot be parsed. It was it’s own unique relationship. The phrase “indomitable spirit” was surely crafted with The Brun in mind. Few dogs spend their 15 years smiling and filling a house with so much love as Bruno did even in the face of so many adversities. At the age of 5, he ruptured a disc in his back and was completely paralyzed unable to walk at all. After two back surgeries, months of Michael and I and Bruno doing physical therapy in the bath tub; a determined look fixed in his always expressive eyes; and eventually moving to water therapy in the pool, incredibly he regained about 70% of his back legs. Related: Happy 15th Birthday, Bruno The Wonder Dog There was surgery to repair an issue with his bladder. There was the scratched cornea which led to the cone of shame which he hated. But weeks of the cone and five different eye drops multiple times a day, he healed again. The past year he’s been coping with the onset of Cushings Disease, an autoimmune condition. None of this fazed The Brun. Truly, he was Bruno the wonder dog. Without too many details, Monday night he passed out in front of us in obvious distress. After minutes of mouth to mouth resuscitation he came back. He was shaken, but we stayed up with him thinking he would, like everything else, shake it off. He spent the night sitting up afraid to lie down. His breathing was measured but at least he was breathing. After about 7 hours of watching him through the night we took him to his vet. During the drive to the vet’s office, he had another “attack” and almost passed out in the car again. The doctors were able to ascertain he had developed serious heart disease which kept him from getting enough oxygen in his lungs. We were told with treatment and drugs he could get somewhat better, but it was likely he would have more attacks, and a very rough road ahead for him – and he would never be 100% again in terms of breathing. We’d never seen fear in Bruno’s eyes. Bruno was a champion; the quarterback under pressure who never blinked. He could see us but it was clear his focus was on breathing. We knew that his last months couldn’t be this. This was not how Bruno lived his life. We’re thankful we had the information to make that terrible decision that no one ever wants to make. He was calm; he knew we were there in his last minutes. We share this as so many people knew Bruno, and so many had come to know him via The Randy Report. We know he will always be a part of us, that our memories are forever. Right now it’s just the void, the sense of someone missing, the lights are dimmer, everything seems to be less colorful. Life feels less. But he has crossed the rainbow bridge and he’s running so fast again, jumping impossibly high, outracing the big dogs and playing with his family Sabrina, Bandit and Olivia (and so many new friends). We’ll be fine. Tyler and Bear (Bruno’s pups) are still here at the age of 14 and clearly sense the change. They’re being very sensitive to us. We felt we needed to share this out of respect for the huge impact that Bruno made in our lives. We weren’t looking for another family member when Bruno came to us, but we were found. And everything was better because of him.

Today, June 16th, is Bruno’s 15th birthday. Bruno, in many ways, is a lot of who I want to be: confident, smart and good-looking. I took the footage from the below video in the first few days he came into my life. I made the video shortly thereafter. On top of his confidence and intelligence, he shows me so much love every day, it’s sometimes hard to believe. I think he’s a better living being than I. In June 2006, he sustained a crippling back injury that left him paralyzed. Michael and I rushed him to a vet who far too quickly suggested we do the unthinkable – I can’t even write the words. I snatched him from the vet and ran him to the only animal surgical center in all of Nevada. Bruno was in surgery within two hours of his accident. Shortly after his surgery, he couldn’t feel his back paws. It was possible he might never walk again. Michael and I steeled ourselves to the reality that we would all face a future of Bruno with “wheels” for his back legs. But fortunately, the next morning feeling slowly came back to his back legs. Over the next many weeks, I lived 24 hours a day with Bruno in our bedroom. He had to be kept quiet to heal, and he’d only be quiet if I sat with him. So – I barely left the bedroom. And when I did, it was for only minutes. Slowly, we introduced him to physical therapy in our bathtub to get him using his legs again. It was slow going. Slow. And a few months later he needed a second back surgery. But it was all worth it. Many times over. Today, Bruno has about 70% use of his legs again. He walks ok; tile floors are not his friend. And he kind of gallops more than runs. But I love him more than I can express. In many ways, I feel he’s my best friend. He’s handsome, confident, and he loves me. And he’s the daddy to our three fourteen year old “puppies,” Tyler, Bandit and Bear. Every morning begins with Bruno in my lap as I check email, begin work on this blog, and start to face the day. Every night ends with me reminding him he’s a super dog. Below are some of my favorite photos of Bruno: as a puppy, with Michael, and a snapshot of every morning with Bruno at my desk. Happy birthday, Bruno.

| I can’t believe I’m posting this, but every day starts like this. Always first in my lap, always sleeping on my left arm. |
Did someone say, “National Puppy Day?”
How could I not post a pic of my handsome bestie – Bruno the wonder dog. I call this his “headshot.”
This was when the Brun was about one year old. We’re about to celebrate his 15th b-day this June.
Hope you all give a scratch and pet and treat to the puppy nearest to you.
Such joy from these dogs. Ain’t no wheels gonna slow them down.
Almost ten years ago, Bruno the wonder dog had an accident and was paralyzed from his mid-torso down. We got him into surgery within an hour or two, but we were faced with the possibility that he might have to live the rest of his life in a doggy-wheelchair. At the time, the doctors told us that dogs cope very well with the wheelchair. They don’t get sad, they just adjust and live their lives.
Fortunately, Bruno regained the use of his back legs, but watching this video I know he would have been great with wheels.
Special place in heaven for the person who’s helping these awesome dogs.
I’ve been away from home for five weeks on business and missing my bestie, Bruno the wonder dog.
But today my friend John (who’s dog sitting) shared with me this pic of my guy chilling outside.
