That Time When Bob Costas Sat Down With Bill Maher

Clip description: Bob Costas joined Bill Maher tonight to talk politics, guns, and the politically correct “bullshit” that both of them are getting tired of.

Maher brought up Costas’ infamous Sunday Night Football commentary about American gun culture, which Costas completely stood by. He told Maher that of course there are limits on what kind of weapons civilians should get access to, like “cop-killer armor-piercing bullets” or bazookas or tanks.

Maher then asked Costas if he thinks politically correct culture is “kind of out of hand,” citing President Obama‘s reluctance to say “Islamic extremism.” Costas said, “You need people on the left to call this bullshit out.”

Costas also said conservatives need to be calling out right-wing bullshit too, and lamented the selective nature of cable news where people just stick to their partisan corners. He asked, “Why can’t people with common sense hold two truths in their head at the same time?”

George Takei explains to Bill Maher the realities of gay issues, Bill Shatner and television in the 1960s

One of the saddest facts about the original Star Trek cast is that actors George Takei and William Shatner can’t stand each other in real life.

During his appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher, Takei was grilled by Bill Maher on that never-ending feud that reminds millions of Americans of the time members of their favorite band didn’t get along. “You just want to go, ‘Come on, Bee Gees, just get along!'” the host joked.

“Well, we’re human,” Takei explained, with Maher expressing confusion that someone from our northern neighboring country couldn’t get along with someone else.

“Canadians have a certain image of being even-tempered and friendly and all that,” Takei continued. “Well, he is a person who is that way with himself. He is very self-centered.”

After a hearty laugh, the geek celebrity-turned-Internet-sensation said, “We work together. We’re professionals. We get the work done, but, it’s with a lot of difficulty.” He joked with Maher that the temptation is sometimes there to just “drive the starship into a death star” just to spite Shatner (weird mix of geek references, eh?).

The feud came up again when Takei talked about how his cast-mates all knew was gay except for one. “It went right over his head.” The obvious answer: William Shatner.

Dan Savage goes ballistic talking Liz Cheney and Catholic priests on Bill Maher

Dan Savage sat down with Bill Maher to talk about “buttloads” of gay stuff, including religious officials, like a priest, who testified in Hawaii that gay marriage will harm children.

Replies Savage: “He’s confusing children who were raised by gay parents with children who were raped by Catholic priests.”

Savage also lays in to Mary Cheney and Heather Poe for their hypocrisy on the marriage equality beef between them and Cheney sister Liz:

While Liz Cheney faces an uphill climb in her bid for a senatorial seat in Wyoming, Savage said, Mary Cheney still had a history of supporting not just her father during his tenure as vice president, but 2012 Republican presidential Mitt Romney. Savage repeatedly mentioned that Mary Cheney both voted for Romney and donated $2,500 to his campaign. “Unlike her sister, Liz, who’s saying ‘it’s a state issue,’ Romney wanted to rewrite the U.S. Constitution to ban same-sex marriage in every state, even overturning gay marriages in states where it had already been legalized,” Savage said. “Romney was 1,000 times worse than Liz, and Mary wrote that fucker a check.”

The discussion wraps up with chatting on Alec Baldwin – famed liberal – who reverts to childhood taunts (“cocksucking faggot”) when angry.

Bill Maher on some folks “good Christian values”

Mediaite breaks down Bill Maher’s throwdown from last night:

Bill Maher ended his show Friday night with a blistering takedown of religious people who would love to do things like take care of the starving and needy if it weren’t always for some personal conflict getting in the way. Maher said these Christians should “just admit you’re selfish” and come to terms with the fact that their actions do not “mirror the spirit of Jesus.”

Maher ran the gamut from Republicans pushing for more food stamp cuts to a Christian family that left a homophobic note instead of a tip for their gay waiter. Maher said they repeatedly emphasized the line “not share” to show “they’ve really absorbed the message of Jesus.”

Maher mocked the Christian message of “I believe in charity, just not for people who need it” and concluded that “there’s always a good moral Christian reason to tell everyone you meet to fuck off and die.”

Ann Coulter on Bill Maher – November 1, 2013

Ann Coulter made an appearance last night on Bill Maher’s REAL TIME on HBO hawking her latest book.

It is kind of amazing to grasp that Bill Maher really IS friends with Ann Coulter.

While I, of course, disagree with her on every issue, she’s become more a that “carnival/side-show” kind of thing to me now. Like Sarah Palin, no one really takes her seriously and we watch just to see how outrageous she’s going to be this time.

Kind of fascinating in a weird, “through the looking-glass” way.

Dan Savage on Bill Maher’s REAL TIME

Dan Savage talks with Bill Maher about his reactions to this year’s monumental Supreme Court rulings on gay marriage, the most laugh-out-loud awful anti-gay arguments, and one of his favorite ways to troll Christian conservatives. He also explained to Maher how gay male couples are most likely to be promiscuous, while lesbian couples are most likely to be monogamous, leading him to conclude that the problem with monogamy is simply “dick.”

From Mediaite: Savage credited all of the people brave enough to come out to their families as one of the biggest contributing factors to the social progress that’s been made in the United States. One significant achievement was that, while years ago, “if one of those douchebags who’s always threatening to kill me made good on it,” as Savage put it, his family would not get the same kind of benefits straight couples would when one of the partners dies.

Bill Maher on conservatives’ “Obama hate”

Bill Maher shot down claims that Obama has been racking up the government spending with statistics showing that of every president since Ronald Reagan, Obama has had the smallest annualized growth of federal spending. Or, in Maher’s words, “the black man’s is the shortest.”

He pointed to Obama’s concessions and moderate actions on the financial crisis, oil drilling, and other big issues.

Once again, Maher asked conservatives exactly what they mean when they claim Obama is the most radical president of all time.

[Obama] didn’t go on a spending spree. He didn’t break up the too-big-to-fail banks. They’ve only gotten bigger. And fail-ier. That’s not what liberals wanted. That’s what conservatives wanted.

At the 2008 convention, Sarah Palin chanted “drill baby drill!” Under Obama, there’s more drilling than ever. That’s not what environmentalists wanted. That’s what conservatives wanted.

Obama spent most of last year conceding the Republican premise that government needed cutting. That’s not what progressives wanted. That’s what the Tea Party wanted.

The Dow was at 7949 when he took office. Now it’s 12000 and over, and corporate profits are at their highest ever. If he’s a socialist, he’s a lousy one. He could not be less threatening if he was walking home with ice tea and Skittles.

So the question remains. How could you guys be so unhappy with Obama while I’m so unhappy with Obama? You think you got coal in your stocking? I wanted single payer health care, a carbon emissions bill, gun control and legalized pot. If you get to carry around all this outrage over me getting that sh*t, shouldn’t I have gotten it?

So just admit it. This isn’t about what Obama is. It’s about what you need him to be. Because hating him is what gets you up in the morning.
