Forever ‘Dreamgirl’ (and longtime LGBTQ ally) Sheryl Lee Ralph dropped some nuggets of wisdom tonight as she accepted the 2023 Critics Choice Award for “Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series” for her performance in Abbott Elementary.

Anyone who’s talked to me about great Broadway moments knows I point to seeing the original Broadway cast of Dreamgirls in the early 80s as a ‘change point’ my life in the way I looked at theater as an actor.
I’d never seen people onstage be so raw, so real. Sheryl Lee was a huge part of that equation as the original “Deena Jones.” Regal and strong.
Twenty years later I got to work with Sheryl Lee in a production of the musical Applause in Los Angeles. Trust and believe, she did not disappoint, and she was warm and wonderful to the entire cast and crew.
So, it goes without saying that I’m thrilled for her success with Abbott Elementary. Last year, she won a Primetime Emmy Award for her work in Abbott Elementary, and earlier this month she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award.
