From ABC News:
Federal prosecutors in New York alleged the New Jersey Democrat accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes in the form of cash, gold bars, mortgage payments and more in exchange for the senator’s political clout.
Three New Jersey businessmen who were also charged, along with the governments of Egypt and Qatar, were the alleged recipients. Two of those co-defendants, Wael Hanna and Fred Daibes, were also convicted of all counts they faced.
The jury deliberated for about 13 hours over three days.
This is where I point out that Republicans keep talking about a so-called “two-tier justice system” where they say the Justice Department applies laws more stringently to GOPers versus other people. But if that’s true, how is it President Biden’s son Hunter was found guilty on felony gun charges last month, and now Menendez has been found guilty on his corruption charges…? When Menendez was indicted on these charges months ago, Senate Democrats were quick to ask him to resign. That doesn’t sound like they “take it easy on their own.” Soon after today’s verdict was announced, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Menendez’s fellow New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker (D) called for Menendez to resign.
In light of this guilty verdict, Senator Menendez must now do what is right for his constituents, the Senate, and our country, and resign.
