Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Announces Independent Run For President

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., nephew of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, has announced he is abandoning his long-shot pursuit for the Democratic presidential nomination and will run in the 2024 election as an independent. https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1711422976912978345 From the New York Times:

Since announcing his candidacy in April, Mr. Kennedy, 69, has been a sharp critic of Democratic leadership, which he has accused of “hijacking the party machinery” to stifle his challenge to President Biden.

He has also said, in interviews and in public appearances, that the party has abandoned its principles and become corrupted.

Running as an independent will entail an expensive, uphill battle to get on the ballot in all 50 states.

Here’s how his announcement rally went: https://twitter.com/atrupar/status/1711435615949009003 Democrats have expressed concerns that any third-party candidacy could peel off voters from Biden. An environmental lawyer, prominent conspiracy theorist, and a big figure in anti-vax circles, Kennedy has alienated large swaths of the Democratic party as well as his own family members, who have publicly denounced his candidacy. When he initially announced his run for the Dem nomination, some polls showed him getting near 20% support. But that quickly evaporated after Republicans began to faux “embrace” him. Recent polling showed him with about 14% support, which clearly wasn’t going to get it done. Four of his siblings issued the statement below saying his announcement “is deeply saddening for us.” https://twitter.com/KerryKennedyRFK/status/1711419719683559659 https://twitter.com/robreiner/status/1711425048702071281
