Pope Approves Blessings For Same-Sex Couples

Pope Francis has formally approved blessings for same-sex couples. In the announcement, the Vatican says that people seeking God’s love and mercy shouldn’t be subject to “an exhaustive moral analysis” to receive it. In today’s declaration, Francis makes clear that blessings for same-sex couples will be available as long as the ritual doesn’t resemble the sacrament of marriage, which remains reserved for only heterosexual relationships. https://twitter.com/AP/status/1736751606585008297 https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1736759376474472882 More from the New York Times:

In October, the Vatican released Francis’ private response over the summer to doubts from conservative cardinals about the possibility of blessing same-sex couples, a practice they absolutely opposed.

Francis instead suggested the blessings were a possibility, seemingly reversing a 2021 Vatican ruling that came down hard against the blessing of gay unions, arguing that God “cannot bless sin.”

The issue of blessing same-sex couples has exploded in recent years, especially in Germany, where priests have regularly offered blessings despite resistance from the Vatican.

It’s worth noting that today’s announcement marks a 180 reversal by Francis who, in March 2021, said blessings for same-sex couples weren’t possible because God “doesn’t bless sin.” https://twitter.com/MSNBC/status/1736783948909277409
