Yesterday I saw reports coming out of Florida that Palm Beach County denied a funding request to repair the air conditioning at a city-owned building that houses the Compass Community Center, South Florida’s oldest LGBTQ nonprofit.
The county pointed to a new state law, signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis on April 23, that prohibits funding for DEI programs. In other words – no help for the gays. However – the law doesn’t go into effect until 2027.
County officials have now reversed their decision and will now fund the repairs at the city-owned building.

Palm Beach County Administrator Joe Abruzzo has restored $308,000 in funding for repairs to the Compass LGBTQ+ Community Center building in Lake Worth Beach, reversing a recent denial that had sparked backlash from the nonprofit and local leaders.
The restored funding will go toward repairs to the building’s air conditioning system and elevator, two issues Compass leaders said were critical to keeping the city-owned facility safe, functional and accessible.
The move comes just a day after Compass publicly pushed back on the county’s earlier decision to deny repair funding.
In that dispute, Compass argued county officials had improperly relied on Florida’s new anti-DEI law, SB 1134, even though the law does not take effect until 2027.
Compass also stressed that the request was for basic building repairs to a public building owned by the City of Lake Worth Beach, not for programming.
