At last count, there are 179 out LGBTQ athletes participating in the Tokyo Olympic Games (triple the number at the 2016 Rio Games). And the good folks at Outsports are following along with an imaginary premise of how ‘Team LGBTQ’ would rank if they were all on one team representing one country.
Currently Team LGBTQ ranks 7th overall, just ahead of France and South Korea. Rankings are determined by: 1) gold medals; 2) silver medals; 3) bronze medals; 4) total medals.
The Team LGBTQ medal totals as of now:
• Gold: 6
• Silver: 7
• Bronze: 6
• Total: 19 (as of Sunday, August 1)
The most recent out American athletes to score medals were Hannah Roberts, who won a historic silver medal in the first ever Olympic BMX competition, and Raven Saunders, who takes home the silver medal in the women’s shotput.
