Happy heavenly birthday to Broadway legend (and I use that word accurately) Stephen Sondheim, who would have turned 94 today. No one in musical theater who understands the art form doesn’t worship at the altar of Sondheim. With Sondheim backstage during the 2001 Broadway revival of ‘Follies’ I was incredibly fortunate to appear in one of his masterpieces – Follies – on Broadway in 2001. What I remember most from the experience (aside from living that incredible score each night) was the all-encompassing feeling that the entire cast felt lucky just to be there. The musical genius passed away on November 26, 2021, at the age of 91. Here are just a couple of my favorite Sondheim favorites: “Not A Day Goes By” from Merrily We Roll Along and “Marry Me A Little” from Company. Take a moment and enjoy the genius… https://youtu.be/5kMlQgyz834?si=_Ecl3vEAQJer5o4D https://youtu.be/AzA97oMW2_M?si=SqCMZVIYmklEPrAp In 2020, while the world was just beginning to endure the COVID pandemic, Broadway still found a way to celebrate Stephen Sondheim’s 90th birthday with this brilliant live-streamed celebration, “Take Me to the World: A Sondheim 90th Birthday Celebration.” Kick back and enjoy – this is a whole lotta wonderful. https://www.youtube.com/live/A92wZIvEUAw?si=acVXCThYDK5IGxwH
