John Duff takes showmanship to the disco in his new single/music video, “Be Your Girl,” a celebratory anthem from another time. The explosive disco number, with its 1940s-inspired arrangement and top line, is a romantic showstopper about unrequited love – with a twist. “In today’s modern world, when so many queer artists are releasing authentically queer music, I thought it would be fun to retroactively go back and design a legacy artist that never got a chance to exist,” Duff explains. The music vibe is irresistible, the choreography (by Duff and Nico O’Connor) is spot on in a ‘familiar yet fresh’ vein, and Duff is charismatic – owning the spotlight as if born there. https://youtu.be/Uqb_kYi4BT0?si=MBn2hRQWoGWiGvCs “The song is about wanting to be chosen,” says Duff. “Every time I put out a new song, I have to compete for attention. You’d think after six years of releasing music, I wouldn’t still be so desperate, but alas – here I am again, begging to ‘Be Your Girl.’” “It’s everything I want to see in the world and simultaneously the antithesis of what is cool right now,” Duff says. Not only did Duff co-write the song, record the vocals, conceive the visual, and co-choreograph the video, he singlehandedly costumed the whole extravaganza, outfitting himself, as well as the 38 other complete looks for the dancers. My personal success is contingent upon its execution.” Check out my previous coverage of the delicious Mr. Duff’s music here. And look for him onstage at Chicago’s Pride Fest on June 22.
