Some news items for you as we start the new week:
• The Fight: Netflix’s Spanish-language queer epic La Bola Negra (above) has won the prestigious People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, instantly cementing its status as an Oscar-season frontrunner.
• The Advocate: Trump’s Department of Justice has pressured two more major hospital systems to end gender-affirming care for minors.
• OUT: A song from out country music star Orville Peck’s new album hints at a make-out session with a member of the Las Vegas Raiders: “I love the Lakers, the Mets and the Longhorns, made out with a guy on the Raiders…” Peck says he got permission from the footballer to include the vague reference.
• Reuters: A new Reuters/Ipsos poll found Donald Trump’s approval rating fell to 32% – the lowest of his political career – as his fellow Republicans soured on his handling of the cost of living amid the unpopular Iran war.
• AP News: ICE has stopped publicly revealing where it is holding thousands of detainees who are subject to final deportation orders. This will make it nearly impossible to file habeas petitions, because attorneys won’t even know what federal district their client has been moved to to stage for their removal.
• Gayety: Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) has denied an ethics complaint alleging she had sexual relationships with three staffers, including two women, and arranged a $200,000 payment connected to the claims. Cue the memes…
