House Passes Spending Package Just Hours Before Shutdown Deadline

The current Republican House majority really likes to push their luck as the House passed a $1.2 trillion spending package today just hours before a midnight government shutdown deadline. https://twitter.com/washingtonpost/status/1771203216518115430 From the Washington Post:

The bill, which passed by a 286 to 134 vote, would fund about three-quarters of the federal government for the next six months while also raising military pay, eliminating U.S. funding for the U.N. relief agency for Palestinians, and bolstering security at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The government’s fiscal year begins Oct. 1 annually. Ideally, that’s when a budget would be set. Most shutdowns occur then or in the two months following. But a shutdown this weekend would be more than halfway through the fiscal year and the latest ever.

The legislation now heads over to the Senate, where Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) says they are ready to “spring into action” to pass the bill and send it to President Biden’s desk. The far-right GOP House members continued to whine throughout the vote this morning. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) declared from the House floor that the spending bill “will absolutely destroy” the Republican majority and “will tell every single one of our voters that this majority is a failure.” She then filed a motion to vacate against the speaker, accusing the speaker of failing to do more to secure America’s border and for working with Democrats on a bipartisan spending deal. https://twitter.com/washingtonpost/status/1771206767369654645 https://twitter.com/RepMTG/status/1771209341015617711
