During his first appearance in federal court this morning, Ryan Wesley Routh, the suspect in the apparent assassination attempt of Donald Trump, was charged with possession of a firearm while a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

The initial gun-related charges were filed as prosecutors seek to keep Routh detained while authorities continue to investigate the incident.
The incident happened about 1:30 p.m. ET Sunday after a Secret Service agent noticed the barrel of a rifle poking from the fence between the 5th and 6th hole of Trump International Golf Club West Palm Beach, Florida, in a tree line near a heavily traveled road.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said the agent fired at the gunman, who officials said was within 500 yards of Trump. Bradshaw said no shots were fired by the gunman, who later fled in a car.
The eight-page criminal complaint against Routh makes no mention of whether he fired his weapon — only that a Secret Service agent fired after seeing the barrel of the gun poking through the bushes on the edge of the golf course. Law enforcement noted that Routh was very calm when he was stopped and taken into custody. Cell phone data obtained by law enforcement shows Routh was apparently in the vicinity of the golf course for nearly 12 hours before he was spotted by Secret Service. Routh seems to be all over the map in terms of political leanings. He indicated on social media he voted for Trump in 2016. Then supported Tulsi Gabbard in 2020, and this year supported a Vivek Ramaswamy/Nikki Haley ticket in the presidential race.
