Social media giant Meta has announced it will reinstate Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts. This comes following a two-year suspension – the result of Trump’s breaking Meta rules and inciting violence in regard to the January 6 invasion of the U.S. Capitol building. https://twitter.com/axios/status/1618368119088578560 “We’ve always believed that Americans should be able to hear from the people who want to lead the country,” Meta’s president Nick Clegg told Axios. “We don’t want to stand in the way of that.” According to Clegg, the Trump accounts – where the Donald has 34 million followers on Facebook and 23 million on Instagram – will be reinstated “in the coming weeks.” More from Axios:

Trump will be subject to new policies that Meta has created following feedback from its independent Oversight Board that could restrict his accounts — including his ability to run ads — should he violate the company’s policies in the future.

“We just do not want — if he is to return to our services — for him to do what he did on January 6, which is to use our services to delegitimize the 2024 election, much as he sought to discredit the 2020 election,” Clegg said.

The ability to run ads on Facebook played a key role in Trump’s 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns. As previously noted, Elon Musk has reinstated Trump’s Twitter account. But Trump hasn’t returned to that platform yet, choosing to remain on his Truth Social account (most probably due to contractual agreements with Truth Social). https://twitter.com/RepAdamSchiff/status/1618368885799145472 https://twitter.com/Victorshi2020/status/1618370443702042624 https://twitter.com/CREWcrew/status/1618372113966174216
