Facebook Group Offers ‘Stand In’ Parents For LGBTQ Weddings, Holidays

TikTok Stand In Families

is home to nearly 30,000 queer people and allies, either seeking love and family or offering comfort such as standing alongside same-sex couples on their wedding day if they don’t have the support of their biological family. The group aims to fill  the void some LGBTQ people face when their families refuse to accept them. “There’s parents that want to be there for you on your big day, and we’ll be your biggest fans,” Daniel Blevins said in the video that would go on to spark the Facebook group “TikTok Stand In Families.”

Blevins, the group’s co-founder, says he was blessed with affirming parents who never had issues with his sexuality. He wanted to extend that support to others who weren’t as lucky when, inspired by Free Mom Hugs, he offered to serve as a stand-in family in his viral TikTok video.

According to The Trevor Project, 42% of LGBTQ young people “seriously considered” suicide this past year. More than half of them were transgender and nonbinary.

“For me, it’s kind of a way of giving them what I had,” the eastern Tennessee dad says.
