Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive former public health official, has won Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary clinching the nomination in an oh-so-tight race over moderate opponent Rep. Haley Stevens.

Stevens and her allies spent a massive $65 million on ads, compared to $7.5 million by El-Sayed and his supporters.
Popular Gov. Gretchen Whitmer endorsed Stevens in late July — a last-ditch effort to stop El-Sayed’s buoyant campaign.
El-Sayed, a former public health official, will now face former Rep. Mike Rogers, who claimed the Republican nomination without opposition Tuesday.
Their race in November is expected to be one of the most competitive in the country, and it could determine which party controls the Senate.
Born in a Detroit suburb, El-Sayed is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Oriel College, Oxford, attending them on a full-tuition scholarship and a Rhodes Scholarship, respectively. He received his Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University.
