President Joe Biden hosted Donald Trump, his successor, at the White House today. Even though such meetings – an out-going president hosting the incoming one – are a decades-old tradition, it is a courtesy Trump did not extend to Biden in 2020. The two men discussed the transition in a brief, polite appearance. President Biden: “Congratulations. Looking forward to a smooth transition…Welcome back.” President-elect Trump: “Politics is tough and it’s in many cases not a nice world, but it is a nice world today. I appreciate it very much.”

FYI – First Lady Dr. Jill Biden invited Melania Trump for a traditional meeting between the incoming and outgoing presidential spouses but Melania declined to attend. The office of the First Lady said that she joined her husband in greeting Trump at the White House this morning and gave Trump a letter for his wife.
