The results of Round 3 of voting for Speaker of the House (screen cap) Well, this must be humiliating for Kevin McCarthy, the Republican leader in the House who assumed he would easily become the new Speaker of the House thanks to the (slim) Republican majority. On the first round of voting, 19 Republicans voted against McCarthy when he could only afford to lose 4 votes. Contrast that with the Democrats who were fully unified behind their leader, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). In fact, Jeffries received more votes than McCarthy garnering 212 to McCarthy’s 203. But, of course, someone has to get to the magic number of 218 votes.
